Oxheart: A Houston Dining Experience

If you're lucky enough to secure a reservation at Oxheart you will not be disappointed. The small dining room only has 30 seats. This Houston restaurant is so popular that reservations are taken weeks in advance. Oxheart is not quite a vegetarian restaurant, as there are a few meat and seafood options, but the menu comprises primarily delicious vegetable dishes like warm Sunflower Seed Soup and Heirloom Carrots cooked with exotic spices, coconut, avocado, and corianders. The menu changes frequently but is always full of flavorful options. Order the chef's tasting menu for a taste of everything. You will not be disappointed with seven courses of careful created dishes. Everything is made with care to create a delicate mix of flavors. You can even see the chefs cooking in the open kitchen that is the center of the restaurant. The service is wonderful, taking the time to explain each dish that is brought out to you. Make sure you sample the desserts created by the talented pastry chef.

Murder by the Book: Mysteries and More

As the name implies, Murder by the Book, a comfy neighborhood book store, has the mystery genre as its main focus. The shop has an extensive mystery section and is host to frequent book signing events from some of the genre’s biggest names. However, if you’re looking for fantasy, nonfiction, or romance, Murder by the Book has still got you covered. This is an old fashioned full service book store, something that is becoming increasingly rare in this age of megastores and online shopping. Unlike larger, more impersonal retailers, Murder by the Book is staffed by friendly folk who will grow to know your tastes are always there to give you personalized advice. There is a real community surrounding the store, bolstered by twice-monthly book discussion groups and an ongoing Mystery Author Luncheon Series at the Briar Club.

Rocking Music and Delicious Food at Sambuca Houston

If you love listening to live music while you sip and supp, Sambuca Jazz Café is your dinner destination.  Located in the Rice Hotel, Sambuca’s eclectic offerings appeal to an eclectic crowd: it works well for a business lunch, as a fun place to unwind during rush hour (also known as happy hour), and as a hot date spot.

Sambuca’s music calendar is as diverse as the establishment’s bar, beverage, food, and dessert menus! Check ahead to coordinate your evening with the sort of music you prefer since each night hosts a different flavor, including acoustic and classic rock, sultry singers, Latin mix, blues, country, jazz, and variety dance.

There’s something on the menu for every taste and appetite, from pizza to lamb chops and from greens to marinated pork ribs. Leave room for crème brulée or sticky toffee pudding or the martinis, which are magnificent.

Word to the wise: make reservations, but don’t always depend on them.
