Spend an Afternoon Learning About Beer at Buffalo Bayou Brewing in Houston

A chocolate-pecan Scotch ale. A witbier brewed with basil. And a beer that’s inspired by bananas Foster. Houston’s Buffalo Bayou Brewery has all of these beers and more. You can find Buffalo Bayou beers at bars throughout Houston — including bars and restaurants close to Siena at Memorial Heights, like Porch Swing, J Black’s, Star Pizza, and Little J’s — as well as in Dallas and Austin.

But the best way to get a crash course on “Buff,” as fans call it, is by attending a brewery tour, offered noon to 3 p.m. every Saturday. Since the brewery is less than 10 minutes from Siena at Memorial Heights, it would make for a convenient outing — and a delicious one. Head to the brewery to learn about the brewing process and the inspirations of owner Rassul Zarinfar as you sample fresh beers right off the conveyor belt.

You’ll find that Houston itself serves as an inspiration for Zarinfar. His Heritage series consists of a few beers that are nods to local history. The 1836 Copper Ale is named for the year Davy Crockett arrived in Texas; and the Great White Buffalo speaks to the legend of this mythical Texas creature. Brewery tours are $10 per person and include a souvenir tasting glass.

Hermann Park Near Siena at Memorial Heights in Houston Has Something for Everyone

To residents of Houston, Hermann Park is a treasure. At more than 400 acres in size, it has a little something for everyone. It serves as an entertainment venue — a Student Performance Series is held every week in May, usually on a Friday morning, but some weeks performances are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, too. It has a choo-choo train, which takes kids and adults on a 1.8-mile route through the park. It has a huge playground, and most of the equipment is accessible for all kids regardless of ability. And the park has a gorgeous rose garden as well as a Japanese garden. All in all, Hermann Park is a destination for Houstonians every day of the week, but this wasn’t always the case.

In the early ‘90s, a group of residents formed Friends of Hermann Park as a nonprofit citizen organization aimed at preserving and improving the park. Now called the Hermann Park Conservancy, the group has turned a neglected parcel of land into a park that residents can be proud of. Since it’s less than four miles from Siena at Memorial Heights, you can enjoy the park as much as you want.

Taste Barbecue near Siena at Memorial Heights at the Houston BBQ Festival

Barbecue's *almost* synonmous with Texas, and Houston barbecue fans are in for huge treat this weekend: the Houston BBQ Festival!

The third iteration of this flavorful event happens this Sunday, April 26 at Houston's NRG Park. It starts at 1, runs til 5, and features food from a long list of Houston's best BBQ places. Think well-known brick-and-mortar spots like Killen's, Ray's BBQ Shack, CorkScrew BBQ, and more, as well as trucks and trailers like Feges BBQ and El Burro & the Bull.

All told there'll be about two dozen BBQ restaurants participating, which means that this is your chance to taste some of the city's best food all in one spot near Siena at Memorial Heights.

Tickets are $50 and allow attendees to sample unlimited portions from each participant. To ensure there's enough food for everyone, the event's planners have decided to limit the number of available tickets. So: if you'd like to attend, you need to buy tickets online in advance, and you can do it through the Houston BBBQ Festival website.

Cheer on the Houston Rockets at Siena at Memorial Heights

Love the Houston Rockets? Now's your chance to root them on as they begin the NBA playoffs against their in-state rival, the Dallas Mavericks. The Rockets finished the season in second place in the Western Conference, which means that they'd have home court advantage for at least the first two rounds. And that means home playoff games happening just a short trip from Siena at Memorial Heights.

With MVP candidate James Harden, center Dwight Howard, and newcomer Josh Smith, the Rockets hope to play for an NBA Championship this year.

It all starts Saturday night, April 18, at the Toyota Center, with Game 1 against the Mavs. Game 2 will happen on Tuesday, April 21, and the Rockets have made tickets to each game available through Flashseats, the arena's official secondary ticket market.

Prefer to watch it at home? Game 1 will air Saturday at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Watch the Houston Astros near Siena at Memorial Heights

It's the moment baseball fans have been waiting for for months: the start of the new season! And it means that the hometown Houston Astros are embarking on another season. This will be their third year playing in the American League, which means they're cultivating a whole new set of league rivals.

The upcoming Astros schedule, for example, includes home games against the Oakland Athletics, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Seattle Mariners. In May, they'll host the Rangers, Blue Jays, White Sox, and As as well as playing two now-interleague games against the San Francisco Giants. The home games happen at Minute Maid Park, a ballpark in downtown Houston that features a retractable roof, a natural grass playing surface, and a whole host of concessions ranging from classic foot-long hot dogs, burgers and barbecue, craft beer and desserts.

Houston Shopping near Siena at Memorial Heights at The Galleria

This is it: the largest mall in Texas and — according to its website — one of the largest in the entire country. It's the Galleria and it's just a short trip from Siena at Memorial Heights, making it convient to visit. Of course, some visitors note that it's not quite the kind of place you might choose to go if you want to run a quick errand. Many visitors note that you could spend the better part of a day here seeing all the stores. Here you'll find upscale shops like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrom, along with specialty stores like an Apple store, Tiffany & Co., and Gucci.

In addition to the numerous shops, The Galleria also offers a number of restaurants ranging from fast- and fast-casual places to sit-down spots. You can grab a quick snack at Starbucks, Smoothie King, or Auntie Anne's, or enjoy dining at places like Ichiban, the Ocenaire Seafood Room, or Del Frisco's.

Outdoor Fun near Siena at Memorial Heights at Houston’s Bayou City Art Festival

Enjoy art outdoors near Siena at Memorial Heights at the Bayou City Art Festival. This local arts event takes place in Houston's Memorial Park and features the work of hundreds of practicing artists. According to the event's website, nearly 20 different media are represented, which means you'll see paintings, sculptures, photographs, and much more. Music and food are also on the agenda, making the festival a fun place to spend a day outside.

It happens from March 27 through March 29 in Memorial Park. The Bayou City Art Festival begins on Friday, March 27 at noon, then opens on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking and ATMs are available on site, and you can purchase tickets in advance online from the festival's Eventbrite page. (They're $15 for general admission.) Lawn chairs, blankets, sunglasses, and hats are some of the items you might want to consider bringing with you to this fun outdoor event.

Enjoy Espresso near Siena at Memorial Heights at Houston’s Pura Coffee

Enjoy espresso near Siena at Memorial Heights at Houston's Pura Coffee. This local cafe opened just a few months ago, but in its short time it has earned a number of fans and several positive online reviews. On the menu you'll find espresso drinks like shots, lattes, and cappucinos to go with tasty drip coffee. If you prefer tea, Pura has a number of options to try, and you can pair your drink with a snack like a fresh pastry. (Gluten free choices are available for those with dietary restrictions!)

The cafe space is open and welcoming, with Wi-Fi, large tables, and a brightly lit interior, making it a pleasant place to do a bit of work or simply to linger with your drink. Coffee beans are available to go, too.

If you'd like to see the place for yourself, Pura Coffee is open Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m. til 8 p.m.

Adkins Architectural Antiques may feel as much like a museum as an antique shop: the store aims to gather interesting salvaged materials from old buildings and homes, and it's developed a collection so compelling that This Old House magazine praised it as one of the top such shops in the country. Even if you aren't fully remodeling a home, the store's said to be a great place to browse and, perhaps, to find a few interesting decorative items to liven up your home at Siena at Memorial Heights.

In addition to large stuff for renovating homes, you can also find vintage pieces made from cast iron, stained glass, clay, stone, and more. Part of the shop occupies a 100-year-old home; the rest flows into a large warehouse space with tens of thousands of square feet to explore. You don't have to step beyond city limits to enjoy an enclave of nature. The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center at Memorial Park brings a snapshot of the wilderness to the city. Its 155 acres of wild space not only offer a calm space to unwind, but also teach guests about the local ecosystem—no matter how young or old they are.

Many locals come to the Houston Arboretum just to watch turtle and squirrels play in the warm Texas sun. However, you can also go for a hike or a leisurely stroll on the five miles' worth of trails—no admission fee necessary. On summer vacation, kids can attend Discovery Class, a week-long camp where they'll learn about the nature of their hometown. The Nature Center also offers some interesting exhibits, intended to entertain both kids and adults.

Located just a short trip from Siena at Memorial Heights, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center might be one of the area's best outdoor destinations.
