Smart Investing Principles from the Securities and Exchange Commission

Whether you’re an experienced investor or you’re considering investing for the first time, we can all learn a few things about making smart investments. These helpful Guiding Principles from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission won’t tell you exactly which investments to make, but they will offer you some useful guidelines:

Make a plan.
This principle advises people to consider the things they want to save for in the future – from a car to your children’s college education – and plan to save and invest to meet those costs.

Save and invest for the long term.
The next principle recommends saving and investing for the long term. Because the stock market goes up and down, it is important to put in the time to see the effects of your investment. Don't fret about day-to-day fluctuations of the market.

Investigate before you invest.
It is always a good idea to research any investment before putting money into it, and this principle details a few key ways to make sure that your investment is worthwhile. From calling your state securities regulator to identifying “get rich quick” schemes, this tip can prevent headaches down the line.

Bradford’s Grill and Tavern: Brews and Bar Bites in Stamford

Bradford’s is a favorite local watering hole in Stamford. Regulars rave about the generous pours that bartenders provide for the mixed drinks, and the prices are extremely fair. What's more, Bradford's boasts a solid beer selection, while an above-average food menu hits all of the classic pub offerings. Regulars note that the hot wings are equally cheap and tasty (they're available in eight unique housemade sauces), the burgers are solid, and the pizzas are surprisingly good.

If you’re a sports fan, an array of big-screen televisions are usually tuned to just about every game of interest, with one screen devoted solely to bar trivia. A large dance floor upstairs draws a rowdy crowd on weekend evenings. The crowd can get a little funky at times, but that should be a good thing!

Lorca: Authentic Churros and Fresh Coffee in Stamford

Stamford’s Lorca combines craftsmanship, charm, and of course, coffee! Owner Leyla Dam was trained as an architect but she decided to channel her love of good coffee and Spanish food into her own business.

Dam traveled to Sevilla to learn how to make churros, the skinny Spanish doughnut, from the authentic source, and then spent a year working at an artisan coffee bar to bring her java skills up to par. The bustling activity level at this Stamford cafe proves that Dam's efforts have paid off, and the churros here win raves. Served with a dark chocolate dipping sauce, they’re bound to become your new favorite sweet treat. If you’re feeling like something more savory, go for a breakfast sandwich.

The Grass Is Greener at Stamford’s Bartlett Arboretum

In 1913, Dr. Francis Bartlett, founder of the F. A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company and noted botanist, purchased 30 acres of woodland in North Stamford to build his home upon. He also built a research laboratory for his company, and over the next few decades, he imported a staggering array of plant specimens from all over the United States to study. In 1965, he moved the laboratory to North Carolina, and the city of Stamford purchased his land and converted it into a public arboretum.

They’ve since expanded it to cover 91 acres of gorgeous parkland that draws locals who need to decompress in the glory of nature. The wildflower meadow is a beautiful habitat for a variety of gorgeous flowers. The indoor herbarium, which is open Mondays through Thursdays, boasts a collection of more than 3,500 species of plants. The arboretum also has a large outdoor play area for kids.

Want to Become a Better Cook? Start by Learning These Culinary Terms!

When you encounter a recipe that’s full of complicated cooking terminology, it’s easy to feel intimidated. What if your chopping instead of dicing leads to a flop of a soufflé? These kitchen terms will teach you a few things about proper cooking techniques, and they’ll make you feel more confident about your next culinary endeavor.

  1. Beat. To beat a mix or batter is not the same thing as mixing it. Beating involves briskly whipping with a spoon, wire whisk rotary beater, or electric mixer, and it incorporates air into the ingredients in order to obtain a light, fluffy consistency.
  2. Blacken. Blackening a piece of meat or vegetables is a popular Cajun cooking technique that chars seasonings onto the food in order to give it a crunchy, spicy coating. This involves cooking over high heat in a heavy skillet.
  3. Fold. If a recipe calls for you to fold one ingredient into another, it means to combine them without decreasing their volume. Use a rubber spatula in vertical swipes across the mixture, pulling some of the mixture from the bottom to the top each time.
  4. Garnish. Once your dish is completed, you may garnish it by adding a decorative bit of fresh herbs, fruit or greens.
