Splashy abstract paintings from Massachusetts-born Frank Stella. Bronze sculptures of the human form by Colombian Alejandro Hernandez. Mixed-media portraits of modern-day scenes by Brazilian painter Fernando Ferreira de Araujo. The art collection at Stamford's Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery is an eclectic mix of contemporary masterpieces, and that's just the way founder and namesake Fernando Luis Alvarez envisioned it.
A contemporary artist himself, Alvarez never quite found a gallery space that adequately catered to his works. That's why he decided to open his own gallery, giving the creations of other modern artists a home. His gallery features the cream of the crop from the U.S. and abroad in an effort to bolster the artistic community in Stamford. In fact, the gallery has gained such popularity among artists that it's completely booked up with international artists—many of whom have had their works showcased at various venues scattered all over the globe. However, Alvarez always reviews new submissions so as not to let any masterpiece slip through his fingers.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday as we remember all those heroes who have served our nation.

Whether you're a professional chef or a novice cook, you've likely come across recipe terms that'll have you scratching your head. Breeze through that next recipe by committing these three common kitchen terms to memory.
Braise
The ideal cooking method for preparing tougher cuts of meat, braising entails browning the meat in fat over high heat. Then, the meat is simmered over low heat in a small amount of liquid, either in the oven or on the stovetop.
Chiffonade
A knife technique for cutting leafy herbs, to chiffonade means to thinly slice leafy herbs and greens. The leaves are stacked, rolled into a tight tube lengthwise, then sliced to create thin strips.
Temper
This term is most commonly found in recipes that add eggs to a hot mixture. The hot mixture is introduced to the egg mixture in small increments to slowly raise the temperature of the eggs. This acclimates the eggs to the heat and prevents the eggs from scrambling.

A thin, chewy crust. A healthy smattering of fresh mozzarella cheese. A drizzle of oil that's hot in every sense of the word. Those are the building blocks for Colony Grill's wildly popular signature Hot Oil pie, which proves that keeping it simple is sometimes the best route. This spicy pie can bear any toppings you choose, from sausage to the extra hot "stingers" if the oil doesn't bring enough heat for you.
Colony Grill has been serving the same simple, thin-crust pies at its flagship location in Stamford since 1935, when the tavern opened following the downfall of Prohibition. And true to the post-Prohibition era, Colony Grill boasts a fully stocked bar. Domestic and imported beers and ales are on tap, so order a pint to extinguish the fire set by a Hot Oil pie. Or wash down your pepperoni- or bacon-topped pie with a glass of wine. Either way, you'll dine in the midst of casual, American decor that makes Colony Grill feel more like a neighborhood watering joint than a local franchise.

At Harlan Social, you'll never be left guessing what Chef Stephen Lewandowski is up to behind closed doors. Snag one of the seats at a counter overlooking the open kitchen, and you'll be able to see for yourself. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and former chef of New York City's Tribeca Grill, Lewandowski spent many years honing his skills before debuting Harlan Social here in Stamford.
The chef's devotion to using mostly local ingredients (that is, ones from the Northeast region) means that his menu changes with the seasons depending on what meats and produce are available. Some of Harlan Social's most popular items include anything containing the fresh mozzarella that chefs create in-house every day, as well as other selections of international cheeses and charcuterie. While most of the menu consists of small plates, it also offers a few main dishes that might take the form of the signature Harlan burger, an herb-crusted rack of lamb, or pan-roasted Atlantic salmon. Each dish pairs well with one of the wines from an extensive list, a cocktail, or a craft brew—all of which can be found at the bar.
