Burgers Shakes and Fries: Just The Classics

If you're looking for a great burger near Darien, local diners will steer you towards Burgers Shakes and Fries, a two-restaurant Connecticut chain that has been dominating the local burger rankings. Owner Kory Wollins has been in the restaurant and hospitality business for fifteen years, and his bright idea to open a high-quality burger joint has paid off. The burgers here are served on toasted white bread rolls, not the usual buns, and that extra oomph pays off. The first bite is savory, crunchy and delectable, and the roll holds up through the entire burger. The patties are hand-formed at the perfect thickness and cooked expertly. The choice of toppings is pretty good, with a fried egg and bacon a popular (if not exactly healthy) choice. Sides are also excellent, with the sweet potato tater tots winning raves.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing you a wonderful and safe holiday season filled with warm memories!

Clean Your Closet: Follow These Tips

If your closet is overflowing with items — much of which you no longer use, it's probably a good idea to clean out your closet. Though cleaning out your closet may not seem like much fun, once you're done, your new, organized space will make you smile, and make it much easier to find the things you actually use and wear. If you're ready to tackle this organizational project, here are a few tips to follow:

Do you use it? Look at the items you have — examine each item and ask yourself if you've used it in the last year. If not, it's time to part ways. Of course, this doesn’t apply to sentimental items, such as your wedding dress, but overall, there are very few exceptions. Look at everything — including accessories like purses, shoes, and jewelry. If you don’t wear it, or it’s no longer in style, say goodbye!

What condition are your clothes in? It's far more useful to have a few, well-made, high-quality pieces, than tons of worn out pieces. Remember the age-old rule — less is more!

Does it fit? If it doesn't fit, get rid of it. (Perhaps keep your favorite "skinny jeans", that you are dieting to get back into, but get rid of the rest.)

Repurpose it. Once you clean out your closet, take all your unwanted items to a consignment shop, and see if you can get some cash for your old clothes. Or, donate the pieces to charity. Unless a piece is damaged, think about giving it a new life!

Cove Island Park: Hit The Beach

Located in the Cove Island section of Stamford, this is one of the most popular beach recreation destinations in town. That’s because it has facilities for just about everyone. Runners and walkers flock to the one-mile loop trail, with a separate path for bikers and rollerbladers. On the shoreline, there are many great fishing spots that lure local anglers. It’s a great place for birdwatching as well, with over 300 native species present. An interpretive trail running along the water’s edge provides great information on the flora and fauna of the region. There’s even a small aquarium on the grounds run by SoundWaters, a nonprofit educational organization. The one thing to keep in mind is that admission to the park is not free.  Non-residents pay $20 for a one-day pass, but Stamford residents can apply for a year-round pass for free. On Saturdays and Sundays there are public sails around Long Island Sound, which are a great value.

The local, organic food movement is in full swing, and if you’re interested in jumping on the band wagon, think about joining a CSA. What’s a CSA? It’s Community Supported Agriculture. You sign up for a “share” of a local farm’s harvest, and each week you’re graced with hearty veggies and plump fruit. As you would imagine, the food is not only fresh, delicious, and better for you, but you’re also supporting your local community by participating. You can visit Local Harvest to find a CSA near you!
