Hammer Out Melodies on a Massive Xylophone at Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens

The musical instruments that live in the fresh air of Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens are unlike anything you'd find in a classroom. For one, the xylophone is waist-high. When you strike the keys of this behemoth xylophone, its stunning notes reverberate throughout the surrounding trees.

The giant xylophone is just one source of the melodies that ring throughout this 91-acre expanse in Stamford. Today, the lilting laughs of excited children also fill the woods. Originally the homestead of tree expert Francis A. Bartlett, who studied many European and Asian trees here, the property eventually changed hands to the city of Stamford and acquired extra acreage and the ability to offer educational opportunities to local schoolchildren. They can come to the park and gardens to enjoy team-building activities and learn more about nature, as can any resident of Stamford.

The arboretum's labyrinth of boardwalks and hiking trails wind throughout gardens, red maple wetlands, and even meadows filled with wildflowers. This means that anyone taking a self-guided stroll walks through a variety of habitats and wildlife on their journey. You can also head to the area with huge musical instruments and other playthings designed for outdoor recreation, or learn more about local flora and fauna at the educational center or greenhouse.

Carriage Barn Arts Center: Palace Of Expression

The Carriage Barn Arts Center is located in a glorious historic stone building on the former Waveny Estate. This is a place with real history — the New Canaan Society for the Arts opened it in 1895. Unfortunately, the Society went dormant in the early 20th century and the barn was shuttered until 1977, when a new group of local artists re-opened it. The barn’s centerpiece, the Betty Barker Gallery, hosts a half-dozen exhibitions every year. Three regulars include the juried photography exhibition and Spectrum, a showcase for many of the area’s best visual artists. The gallery is a well-lit and spacious location that is an awesome environment to showcase works, and the building and its gardens are a pleasure to explore. In addition, the recently-formed Waveny Park Arts Alliance is using the space to host free concerts and theatrical performances in the gallery. **Closed in the summer.

Get Active at Cove Island Park

Cove Island Park is one of Stamford’s waterfront treasures and a great place to spend an active afternoon. Children enjoy the nature center with aquariums and touch tank and nature lovers will appreciate the natural topography. The rocky shoreline and bluffs overlook Long Island Sound, and the park contains salt marshes, intertidal mudflats and estuaries that attract water fowl.  A sandy beach is relaxing for sunbathers and swimmers.  For more active recreation, there is a one mile walking and running trail, as well as a shorter paved loop for cyclists and rollerbladers.  Bring fixin’s for a barbecue and take advantage of the park’s grills. Stamford residents park for free — but be careful not to leave any valuables in your car.
