If you're planning a low-key New Year's Eve, you'll have plenty of energy to start off your 2017 on an active, healthy foot—perhaps by taking part in the First Day Hike at Elk Neck State Park. This local event celebrates the new year with some fresh air and exercise, kicking off at 1 p.m. on January 1st at Mauldin Mountain in the North East River area of the park.

One of the park's rangers will lead this 1.5-mile hike throughout the beautiful state park for about two hours. The pace will be leisurely, so even if you're not an avid hiker, you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up. In fact, this might be the perfect way to ease into a new fitness routine this year. The hike is free, but donations go toward keeping the park beautiful, so you're encouraged to bring some cash if you want to contribute to this local gem. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers or hiking boots.
