Located in the Mission District, Tartine Bakery & Café is a well-known San Francisco establishment famous for its exceptional pastries, cakes, and breads — so famous that the quaint storefront serves anywhere from 600 to 1,200 people every day.
Order a croissant, which are as big as the plate with a shatteringly flaky outside and swirls of soft, pillowy interior layers. Chad Robertson, one of the country’s best bread bakers, serves up flavorful breads with a perfect crackling crust, including the Country Loaf, Ancient Grain, Walnut, Olive, and more. Other favorites include the Pain au Chocolat, Bread Pudding, Quiche, Buttermilk Scone, and Passion Fruit Lime Bavarian Cake.
Tartine’s bread is available daily, but you might want to pre-order your loaf. Pre-orders can be placed three days in advance and may be picked up after 4:30 p.m. Otherwise, be sure to arrive early before the goodies start running out.
