Waterfront Park flickers to life during the warm summer months. That's when residents of Alexandria and nearby D.C. flock to the aptly named park for beautiful views of the water and an ice cream cone. According to one Yelp reviewer, the park plays host to three different ice cream stands—but be prepared to stand in line, because on a sunny day, they all have one. If you need a full meal, many restaurants also reside within walking distance of Waterfront Park.

Plus, the city puts on free movies on the park throughout the summer. Pack up a picnic basket and blanket and bring your whole clan to enjoy one of the family-friendly films or classics at dusk. Of course, there doesn't have to be a special event for you to pay a visit to Waterfront Park. On any day when the sun shines, go for a stroll here or throw around a football. It's located right in the heart of Old Town, so there will always be plenty to see.
