Bar Boheme: La Vie Boheme in Houston

Fans call Bar Boheme the hippest, coolest, busiest, most fun bar in Houston. Prepare for a crush if you go during the rush when everyone converges on the spot to get their party on. Table service is not so speedy, so do what the regulars do and order at the bar. The Frozen Mojito is their signature drink, so why not try it? Other options include the Bohemian with spiced rum, jasmine liqueur, lemon & agave nectar, and the Pink Pussycat with vodka, hibiscus liqueur, sugar & fresh lemon. A nice selection of beer and wine is also on the menu. Bite a Biscuit, Go For a Growler at BRC Gastropub

Eaters experience bacon a little differently at BRC Gastropub. For example, eatery's signature cheddar biscuits come with bacon jam, instead of crowned with crispy strips. You can order one for yourself or an entire box of them to-go—along with a growler of beer. In addition to creating reimagined versions of comfort food, BRC's staff also pours rare craft beers, more than 28 at a time (plus 25 bottled varieties).

Both local microbrews and nationally applauded craft beers come from the taps at BRC. The drafts rotate all the time, but you'll often find everything from a Sierra Nevada IPA to Karbach Weisse Versa Wheat, brewed right in Houston. BRC also keeps some brews in the cellar, debuting them in limited batches. You can often expect a new trending brew to accompany your cheddar biscuits, which you can order with fried chicken. You can also pair your pint with a pub burger, vegan falafel burger, or starter like fried Gulf oysters.

Get climbing at Texas Rock Gym, Houston’s indoor rock climbing gym. The large space features 42 rock wall stations, five with auto-belay, as well as a designated bouldering area. Whether you are an experience climber or newbie, all skill levels are welcome here. Patrons find it a fun yet challenging activity to try when the weather forces you indoors. But unlike the mall, here you’ll get in a great workout. The friendly staff puts a lot of effort into maintaining the gym; everything is well-kept and the routes are changed regularly so the climbs don’t get too easy.

Customers can get all the rental gear necessary, a class, and all day access for just $30. If you really love rock climbing, consider becoming a member and you’ll benefit from unlimited access to the rock gym as well as yoga, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi classes. The "School of Rock" program is designed just for kids with after school and school break camps. Texas Rock Gym also offers private and group lessons for those who want to hone their skills. Try to visit on a weekday as it can get crowded on Saturdays and Sundays.

Cafe Dolce Gelato: Sweet Treats in Houston

Cafe Dolce Gelato, located on the second level of The Galleria near Nordstrom, serves artisan gelato and sorbetto made from scratch, plus grilled panini sandwiches, and cappuccino and espresso. The Italian counterpart to American ice cream, Italian gelato is a dense frozen dessert that boasts less fat than the ice cream we're accustomed to here in the States.

Here, gelato and sorbetto (dairy-free sorbet) are made in-house, using organic whole milk, real sugar, fresh fruit, and ingredients imported straight from Italy. Flavors include Nutella, coconut, salted caramel, hazelnut, roasted almond, and strawberry cheesecake, all of which can be served in a cup or a waffle cone. For a treat that's a little less chilly, opt for the tiramisu. The tiramisu at Cafe Dolce Gelato is made in-house every day using fresh whipped cream.

Cafe Dolce Gelato is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

4 Uses for Coffee Beyond Your Morning Mug

You already think coffee is a lifesaver, but what if we told you that it has other uses aside from your morning mug? There are a variety of different ways to use coffee beans, grounds, and coffee itself, and many of them have nothing to do with that morning jolt of caffeine. Here are some helpful ways to use coffee around the house.

  1. Exfoliate your skin. If you usually use a cream-based face wash, turn it into an exfoliant by adding coarse coffee grounds. Wash your face as you normally would, and the grainy texture will slough away dry, dead skin cells.
  2. Freshen the air. In rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, use coffee as a unique air freshener. Place a small bowl of coffee grounds somewhere out of the way to mask and absorb odors.
  3. Scrub pots and pans. If your pots and pans are covered in grease but you don’t want to take steel wool to the non-stick surface, try coffee instead. Smear some grounds all over the surface of the pan, and then use a sponge or thick rag to apply pressure in small, circular motions.
  4. Create a natural insect repellant. Sprinkle some coffee grounds in closets, on an outdoor patio, or anywhere that bugs frequently visit.
