BlobFest in Phoenixville (July 13-15)

The quaint little town of Phoenixville was, in the 1950s, the set for one of the greatest, goofiest horror movies of all time – The Blob. If you’re not familiar with it, it tells the story of an amorphous alien who crashes to Earth in a meteor and proceeds to engulf everything it can. It’s a classic of the genre, and every year since 2000, Phoenixville’s Colonial Theatre has hosted an annual celebration of the movie. BlobFest features a wide range of activities, the most famous of which include the re-enactment of the movie’s theater scene where a throng of moviegoers flee the Blob, as well as screenings of the movie paired with other corny horrors from the same time period, a rowdy street fair and more. Live music and hilarious diversions like the Fire Extinguisher Parade just put the cherry on top. Even if you’re not a big horror fan, this is very much worth dropping by Phoenixville to see. CitySolve Urban Race (July 7): Run Your Brain

Most city races don’t require a lot of thinking – you start in one place, finish in another, and the route’s usually pretty clear. CitySolve is something completely different. Working in teams of 2-4 people, racers scour city streets following clever and witty clues from point to point. You need both brains and brawn to succeed here, but if you’re not a runner you can get around by public transportation. You’re not allowed to bring anything that would give you a speed edge like a skateboard, though. Each race typically takes between three and five hours, but the fastest solvers can get it done in two. Even better, winners get a $300 cash prize. There are also prizes given for funky costumes, family teams and more. Past races have taken place all over the country, and the fascinating historical landscape of Philadelphia will lend itself perfectly to the event. Tickets are $55 per person but there are discounts available. Click here to learn more about the CitySolve Urban Race!

Federal Donuts: The Sweetest Treats Around

If you’re looking for a sweet treat in Philadelphia, locals rave about Federal Donuts. This amazing shop stocks a carefully-curated selection of fresh, hot, delicious donuts that will tantalize your palate. The Indian cinnamon is exceptional, fragrant, and enticing. The “fancy” donuts might be even better – locals rave about the awesome grapefruit and brown sugar glaze, which combines sweetness and acidity perfectly, and the s’mores donut is a gooey, overwhelming treat. But the big draw here is the chicken. Federal Donuts makes some of the best rotisserie chicken in the entire city, seasoned with spicy, crispy harissa or glazed with an incredible chile-garlic concoction. This chicken is incredibly addictive and cheap to boot. Federal Donuts is one of those kind of places that gets by on the business of devotees – maybe it’s time for you to become one? Go early, because once they sell out, Federal Donuts closes up shop for the day.

The Belgian Café: Flemish Fantasia in the Heart of Philadelphia

This exceptional bar and restaurant has won raves from Philadelphia locals for its powerful dedication to the art of beer. The Belgian Café boasts a well-curated selection of a dozen drafts as well as over 200 bottled varieties. Located on a bright, tree-lined corner near Philadelphia's art museum district, The Belgian Café has both inside and outside seating. The food is just as much of a draw as the beer – regulars rave about the absolutely spectacular mussels, harvested off of Prince Edward Island and cooked in one of two different beer broths. Served with fresh-cut Belgian frites and bourbon aoli, both are worth trying. The rest of the menu is equally strong, with diners praising the moist, juicy burgers as well as the copious vegetarian and even vegan options. The brunch menu is also a lot of fun, with incredible French toast one of this place's most popular picks.

Color Me Rad 5K, June 17

Color Me Rad is a unique and exciting twist on a standard 5K road race that has been touring the country and is finally ready to make a stop in the City of Brotherly Love. The gimmick behind Color Me Rad is simple: runners show up in a white T-shirt and by the end of the race they’re covered in a rainbow of vibrant hues, courtesy of spectators throwing handfuls of non-toxic, brightly-colored cornstarch at them as they run. Sure, it’s silly and messy, but it’s also a ton of fun. At the finish line, a huge celebration tends to break out as sweaty, colorful runners drink, dance, and enjoy each other’s company, laughing at all the hues. A portion of the proceeds go to benefit a local charity as well – in this case, Special Olympics Philadelphia. Pre-registration is required, and races tend to fill up fast, so don’t wait until the last minute. Click here to visit Color Me Rad's website for more information.

Happy Memorial Day!

On this Memorial Day, we hope that you're able to relax and spend time with family and friends, while celebrating all the men and women who have served our great nation.

Dressing for Career Fairs and Jobs Interviews

When preparing for a career fair or job interview, keep in mind the quote “dress for the job you want, not the job you have". Potential employers want to see you dressed as you would be for your first day at the office. This first visual impression is an important one, so make it easy for them to picture you "fitting in" at their office. Since college attire often consists of sweat pants and flip-flops, here are some pointers for entering the business realm:

1. Do some research into the dress code of your desired workplace with the help of your college career center, online research, or possibly through current employees. Then, take it up a notch – you’re aiming to dress the way they would for an important meeting or presentation. This may be an opportunity where you want to ask your parents to go shopping with you, for their advice and (fingers-crossed) financial help.

2. After you get the clothes, take care of them by ironing or dry cleaning, if necessary.  If you nail the style, but have a wrinkled shirt or runs in your stockings, you won't give off a polished, professional first impression.

3. Success can be in the subtle details. Cover up tattoos, remove distracting piercings, and appropriately style your hair. Women should wear minimal make-up and nude stockings with skirts. And, or course, always wear a smile.
