Fabric Workshop and Museum: Sew Cool

Founded in 1977, the Fabric Workshop and Museum was chartered with the intention of promoting the use of fabric and textile materials in the arts. It originally opened as a screenprinting studio focusing on functional arts, but over the life of the Workshop those restrictions have loosened, and now artists in residence work with a wide variety of materials and techniques, including horsehair and fiberglass. The roster of creative people who have collaborated with the Workshop includes luminaries like Louise Bourgeois, Felix Gonzales-Torres, and Glenn Ligon. Visitors rave about the variety of artwork on display in the spacious galleries. The Fabric Workshop and Museum also hosts a variety of educational programs, including a weekly silkscreening workshop and a robust online curriculum.

What To Do First: Stretching or Exercise?

By now, we all know that that stretching is an essential part of our fitness regimen. But one thing that's not clear is whether to stretch before or after your workout. Many people disagree about when it's best to stretch, so check out the info below that will help you make up your mind.

There is a common belief that stretching before exercise helps reduce the risk of injury, but this statement has never been proven to be true. In general, it's believed that it's best to perform dynamic stretching, such as high kicks and arm circles, before your workout. Then post-workout, you should work into some static stretching—forward bends, hamstring stretches, quad openers, and the like—should be performed after your workout for best results. Remember to hold static stretches for 30 seconds, and don't hold your breath while you stretch. Instead, breathe deeply and feed your muscles with oxygen.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving filled with delicious food and warm memories!

Watkins Drinkery: Not Your Typical Bar Food

Located off-the-beaten-track in South Philly, Watkins Drinkery differentiates itself from being just another neighborhood bar by offering a varied, unique menu. South Philly residents will certainly lean toward making Watkins a regular spot, with its Saturday Happy Hours, friendly bartenders, and amusements like game screenings and pool. But food enthusiasts from around the city, especially the carnivorous ones, will be drawn in by Watkins’ exotic offerings, such as the venison nachos, wild game chili, and smoked alligator sausage sandwich. Bring visiting friends and family to Watkins for an authentic ostrich cheesesteak! And don’t worry: less adventurous taste buds can still enjoy fish and chips or a farmhouse burger.
