This Spring, Tee Off at Generals Ridge Golf Course

There's few better ways to enjoy some nice weather than to hit the greens of a golf course. The fairways at General's Ridge Golf Course are well maintained and perfect for a round of 9—or maybe 18!

Many locals say that the course at General's Ridge is one of the most difficult in northern Virginia. That's probably true. You better be up for a challenge when you arrive, because that's what you'll get. There are plenty of hills, valleys, and tight spots between the tee box and the green, so bust out your best club and tee off!

You might also enjoy the FootGolf available at General's Ridge. This unique game combines the sports of golf and soccer for a fun test of skills. Like golf, you'll start in a tee box and kick your ball towards a 21" diameter hole. You're still shooting for par, but the equipment is a lot different.

This isn't a country club sort of atmosphere, so bring your own refreshments. The tradeoff is a cheap and challenging day on the course. Fore!

Tired of the Same Old Gym Routine? Break a Sweat at Vertical Rock Indoor Climbing Center!

Looking for a new, exciting way to break a sweat—outside the gym? Manassas's Vertical Rock Climbing and Fitness Center is the best place to conquer a fear, get a fix for adrenaline, or simply enjoy an out-of-the-ordinary workout.

Open climbs are a great way to get in a workout or introduce a date to climbing. The rate for open climbs runs $20 for 3 climbs and additional $5 for each climb after. Pay another $7 to play around on the bouldering walls where no harness is required. If you're just getting started, know that Vertical Rock takes safety very seriously. The "learn the ropes" class will take you through the basics and put you up on a wall fit for you. More experienced climbers will go through a belay test before conquering the tougher courses.

Vertical Rock is kid friendly and makes for a great birthday party. Call to set it up and an instructor will be there to help your little one and their friends get vertical!

Back for the Season: Historic Downtown Walking Tours with the Manassas Museum!

You can delve deep into the history of the northern Virginia Piedmont region with a visit to the Manassas Museum. Open Tuesdays through Sundays, this community resource hosts exhibits pertaining to our region's settlement through its reconstruction after the Civil War.

And now that spring is officially back, the Manassas Museum is once again offering its popular Historic Downtown Walking Tours! Offered every Thursday and Friday at noon, these one-hour-long walking tours provide history buffs with an in-depth look at Manassas's landmark buildings, its townspeople, and its part in the Civil War.

The walking tours are led by costumed guides, adding authenticity to the narration. What's more, the tours are free with museum admission!

Calling All Bookworms at The Courts at Historic Manassas: Find Fiction, Nonfiction and More at the Central Community Library

There are few community resources more valuable than a public library, and in Manassas, the Central Community Library is just that place. This 23,000-square-foot library is both historic and modern, and its convenient location just minutes from The Courts at Historic Manassas makes it a great place to check out books or attend a class.

At the Central Community Library, you'll find thousands upon thousands of fiction, nonfiction and children's books, as well as resource books and periodicals perfect for students or other types of researchers. Free public access computers and printers are available to anyone with a library card, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The library also contains private meeting rooms where you can attend a group meeting.

Be sure to check out the library's online calendar for a list of upcoming events, like English conversation classes, book bingo, storytimes, and craft workshops!

Good News, The Courts at Historic Manassas! Nathan’s Dairy Bar Reopens March 8!

When your sweet tooth strikes and you're craving cool, refreshing ice cream, you'll love the wide variety of soft-serves at Nathan's Dairy Bar, a '50s-style ice cream parlor near The Courts at Historic Manassas. Reopening for 2016 on March 8, Nathan's Dairy Bar is a favorite among locals during the warmer Virginia months, when a shake or cone provides sweet relief from the summer sun.

Stop by and order from the old-fashioned counter at the bright red and white building, and then take your dessert to one of the matching red picnic tables to enjoy it outdoors. When the weather begins to cool down, the mobile Nate Jr. ice cream bus even drives around town serving fall favorites, like hot apples served over vanilla ice cream and topped with a drizzle of caramel sauce!

Try the Breakfast of Champions at Tin Cannon Brewing Company

Brewmasters Aaron Ludwig and John Hilkert make the perfect complementary pair at Tin Cannon Brewing Company in Gainesville, a town not far from The Courts at Historic Manassas. Whereas Ludwig likes to brew more traditional beers, Hilkert shines when he's experimenting with offbeat brews. Together, they create a wide spectrum of suds ranging from classic to creative.

The more traditional beers include the Virginia Blonde Ale, the Busted Pipe Black IPA, and the Unkel Dunkel Dunkelweizen brew. Some of the more outlandish recipes are ever-present on tap at Tin Cannon, too, like the Vaughn's PB, a chocolaty porter laced with hints of peanut butter. Then there are also seasonal brews and strictly experimental beers that—don't be surprised to come across an amber ale infused with bacon and chipotle peppers (called the Breakfast of Champions) or other unexpected combinations.

The Winery at Bull Run: Enjoy Beautiful Vistas with Wine on the Side

If The Winery at Bull Run looks like it belongs on a postcard, that's probably because it has roots that date back to the 1860s. The owners maintain a vintage aesthetic at their working vineyard complete with rolling hills and a beautiful outdoor patio—so pretty that people often get married here. And it's all just a quick drive from The Courts at Historic Manassas.

You don't have to be celebrating a special occasion though to enjoy some vino at The Winery at Bull Run. You can stop by the tasting room whenever it's open and grab a glass of the Delaney, Fort, or Norton wines (three customer favorites) and pair it with one of the gourmet picnic baskets (call ahead to order one). You can also build a meal from the main bar, which offers everything from meats and cheese to baguettes and spreads.

Learn “What the Civil War Soldier Carries” at the Manassas Museum

Less than half a mile from The Courts at Historic Manassas, you'll find a wealth of information about (what else) historic Manassas: the Manassas Museum. Local history always stars at this nearby museum, but from now until Feb. 28, there will be a special spotlight on Civil War soldiers.

What the Civil War Soldier Carries is a limited-time exhibit that sheds light on what life was like for the men who fought the Civil War. After the museum briefly closed last month, it reopens with a bang with this exhibit brought to you from the private collection of Dr. Charles Poland. He began collecting Civil War-related items at the ripe young age of 12 when he received a biography of Abraham Lincoln as a gift. Dr. Poland's fascination for all this Civil War continued into adulthood, and at the exhibit you can see some of the artifacts he collected over the years.

Show Off Your Art Skills at The Center for the Arts at The Candy Factory

Throughout the month of February, the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory hosts visual art classes of all sorts, from sessions for tots to classes for fully developed artists. Classes also range from month-long workshops to one-day classes, so there is something for all attention spans.

Available classes in February include a step-by-step acrylics class for adults, a Valentine art paper workshop for kids, an intro to Chinese brush painting class, and a Kumihimo necklace class.

Classes range in price, depending on the event that you choose. Admission fees are required for all classes and can be paid online.

Can’t make it in February? No worries, classes continue all year round. Plus, the visual arts classes take place just half a mile from The Courts at Historic Manassas. So get in tune with your inner artist at this hands-on classes at the Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory.

Sip and Savor at a Scotch Whisky Master Class at the Hylton Performing Arts Center

There's no one better than a native Scotsman to teach you a thing or two about Scotch, and that's precisely what will happen Jan. 23 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, less than four miles from The Courts at Historic Manassas. The aforementioned Scot is Dougie Wylie, a man who grew up farming and coaching rugby in a tiny little hamlet in Scotland.

Lucky for you, he now lives in D.C. That's why he's able to host the Scotch Whisky Master Class this weekend. He'll lead guests down the Scotch Whisky Trail, offering nips of Scotch from all over his homeland. Dougie will explain the nuances of each whisky as you sip. Expect rare, upscale whiskies from the likes of the Red River Distillery, Bladnoch, Glenscotia, and other masters scattered across Scotland. Sign up before it sells out!
