Explore Early Colonial Life at the William Brinton 1704 House

April 8, 2014 12:27 pm

William Brinton, Sr., and his family were disillusioned with life in 17th-century England, to say the least. Their Quaker faith had made them targets of persecution in Great Britain—so much so, that they set out for the New World. They landed in Pennsylvania, still an English colony at the time. Shortly after William Senior's death, William Junior put down real roots in what would become West Chester by building the William Brinton 1704 House.

With walls 22 inches thick, crafted from stone sourced from a nearby quarry, this sturdy historic home still stands today. In 1968, it was deemed a National Historic Landmark for the way it preserved early colonial life. One of the oldest and best restored homes in all of the U.S., guests are welcome to tour the home on the weekends from May 1 until October 31. Inside, they'll see relics of Quaker living in early 18th century America, including an indoor bake oven, leaded-casement windows, and furniture from the era.
