Lace Up Your Skates at Ice at the Galleria

Ice at the Galleria is in the Galleria Mall, in the shadow of the glimmering glass atrium. It’s been the place to ice skate in Houston for more than 30 years now. Put on your skates and twirl around on the gleaming ice during one of the public skating sessions. Don’t know how? Take a class via the rink's Learn to Skate Program, geared to beginner and intermediate skaters for both children and adults. Private lessons are also an option. The beginner hockey program fosters the love of the sport in kids aged four and up in a supportive, nurturing environment.

This is also a primo spot for a birthday party, group event, or other special celebration. Check out the Ice Jamz dance party on Friday and Saturday nights. Skate rentals are available.

Cafe Dolce Gelato: An Authentic Taste of Italy in Houston

For an authentic taste of Italy here in Houston, make your way to Cafe Dolce Gelato. This gelato bar, located on the second level of The Galleria near Nordstrom, serves artisan gelato and sorbetto made from scratch, plus grilled panini sandwiches, and cappuccino and espresso. The Italian counterpart to American ice cream, Italian gelato is a dense frozen dessert that boasts less fat than the ice cream we're accustomed to here in the States.

Here, gelato and sorbetto (dairy-free sorbet) are made in-house, using organic whole milk, real sugar, fresh fruit, and ingredients imported straight from Italy. Flavors include Nutella, coconut, salted caramel, hazelnut, roasted almond, and strawberry cheesecake, all of which can be served in a cup or a waffle cone. For a treat that's a little less chilly, opt for the tiramisu. The tiramisu at Cafe Dolce Gelato is made in-house every day using fresh whipped cream.

Cafe Dolce Gelato is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bikram Hot Yoga Houston offers 90 minute, teacher-led sessions in a room that’s heated to 105 degrees. Why so hot? Aficionados claim that the heat loosens muscles and prevents injury. It also promotes detoxification and increases circulation.

Each class takes you through six yoga postures and breathing practices, essentially stretching your muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, and internal organs and helping to circulate highly oxygenated blood throughout your body. A full bar means you can get anything from beer to wine to cocktails. If you just need a snack, you can munch on bar bites like nachos, buffalo wings, pretzel dogs, and potato skins. Heartier appetites will want to throw down on something from the large burger and sandwich menu. The Galleria: People Watching and Window Shopping

You don’t have to go to New York or Paris to window shop top international designers. Just spend an afternoon at Houston’s Galleria. As one of the largest malls in the country, this mall is filled with high-end stores like Burberry, Cartier, Chanel, Coach, Ermenegildo Zegna, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Tiffany & Co., and more. Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and two Macy’s anchor the mall.

There are plenty of options for those with a more limited wardrobe budget too. Popular favorites like American Eagle, Banana Republic, Express, and J. Crew have stores here. You can shop Apple, and Microsoft, as well as Brookstone, Sony, and LEGO. There are even Porsche Design and Tesla stores. Looking for a Texas-themed gift for an out of state friend? Stop by Gifts of Texas for a unique souvenir.

Many come for the indoor skating rink and to stroll around the seemingly endless complex. Grab a gelato from Café Dolce Gelato and stroll the mall window shopping and people watching. The Galleria is the hottest mall in Houston, and it’s crowded compared to other area malls, so be prepared. For those that don’t want to drive around looking for a parking spot, the paid valet and express parking may be solutions.

The Houston Zoo: From Amphibians to Zebras

Plan a day at The Houston Zoo, and get up close and personal with everything from amphibians to zebras. Seemingly endless exhibits—including carnivorous cats, playful primates, and beckoning birds—will provide hours of entertainment. Exhibits are renovated to keep the animals comfortable, and the zoo is contracting new habitats for gorillas, which will return in 2015. The zookeepers are very knowledgeable, so make it a point to make it to one of their talks. Kids love the Giraffe Feeding Platform that elevates visitors to be face to face with these gentle giants. A 4-D movie experience is another family favorite.

Visitors find the zoo clean and well maintained, with a strong conservation and education mission. Admission is reasonable, especially compared to other big city zoos; adults are $14 and children are $10. (You can save a few extra bucks if you purchase the tickets at Fiesta Mart.) The Houston Zoo provides free parking, but it fills up fast on the weekends.

Top Golf USA: A Fun Houston Destination

What’s TopGolf? It’s a fun sports and entertainment venue that combines an array of activities with a tasty food and beverage menu, all right in Houston, Texas!

TopGolf is played on a 215-yard field with micro-chipped balls. Other games include TopScore, Top Scramble, TopChip and TopPressure. Each game has its own rules and is geared to different ages and abilities. You can also play foosball, beer pong, and pool. TopGolf is a great place to hold a kid’s or adult's birthday party, to host a work event, or to have a fun date night. The Hobby Center: The Place for Performance

The Hobby Center for Performing Arts is the center of Houston theatre. Located downtown, the Center is fairly new, opened in 2002 and quickly became the place to go for travelling Broadway shows. The architecture, which includes large windows overlooking the Houston skyline, Everything from classic shows like “Man of La Mancha” to newer productions like “Book of Mormon” make their way to the 2,600-seat Sarofim Hall, a great venue for musical productions. There’s also Zikha Hall, which serves as a showcase for local performers. The 500-seat hall plays hosts to the Psophonia Dance Company, the Maggini String Orchestra, and other local groups. Check out all of the upcoming productions and performances on the online calendar. Other than evening performances, The Hobby Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
