Cockrell Butterfly Center: A Butterfly Habitat in Houston

Butterflies are beautiful, but also perform a vital function in nature. And you can learn all about them at Houston's Cockrell Butterfly Center. As part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Cockrell Butterfly Center is a great experience for the whole family. First, you will get to walk right in the Rain Forests Conservancy, a large butterfly habitat surrounded by winged creatures that might just land on you! In the Brown Hall of Entomology, you’ll learn about insects by checking out lots of specimens and models. You’ll even get a close look at Houston’s largest cockroaches! On the lower level, you’ll get to see what an entomologist’s lab looks like. The Cockrell Butterfly Center is an affordable tour, and groups are also welcome.

Houston Museum of Natural Science: A Place of Fun & Learning

Enjoy and learn about the beauty of the natural world at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Located in the Museum District directly across from the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflecting Pool, the Museum of Natural Science is for kid, adults and families. The main goal of the museum is to educate everyone about the natural sciences, be it through the exhibits of dinosaurs in the Morian Hall of Paleontology, the beautiful specimens in the Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, or other amazing exhibits. Come to Energy Hall and learn about fossil fuels. Check out examples of African wildlife and go to the Farish Hall to learn even more about the wildlife of Texas. There’s so much to see and learn about, that you’ll just have to come back!

Houston Arboretum and Nature Center: Wilderness in the City

Take a trip to the country without leaving the city at the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. This wooded piece of land is a respite from the busy day to day life of Houston’s major metropolitan area. Five miles of trails wind through woods, fields, and wetlands and offer the opportunity to spot local wildlife in its natural habitat. The Nature Center is home to rotating and permanent exhibits focusing on nature and conservation and educational events for kids and adults are held on a regular basis. The Arboretum is also available to rent for events from kids’ birthday parties to weddings, and has event planners and caterers on staff to take care of every detail.

Murder by the Book: Mysteries and More

As the name implies, Murder by the Book, a comfy neighborhood book store, has the mystery genre as its main focus. The shop has an extensive mystery section and is host to frequent book signing events from some of the genre’s biggest names. However, if you’re looking for fantasy, nonfiction, or romance, Murder by the Book has still got you covered. This is an old fashioned full service book store, something that is becoming increasingly rare in this age of megastores and online shopping. Unlike larger, more impersonal retailers, Murder by the Book is staffed by friendly folk who will grow to know your tastes are always there to give you personalized advice. There is a real community surrounding the store, bolstered by twice-monthly book discussion groups and an ongoing Mystery Author Luncheon Series at the Briar Club.

Space Center Houston

Houston’s voice is universal. Synonymous with Mission Control and space flights, Houston is home to both NASA’s Johnson Space Center and to Space Center Houston. Space Center Houston is your ticket to space education and adventure. At Space Center Houston, you can simulate rocket blast-off and everyday life in the microgravity environment of the astronauts.   Get close up to astronauts’ spacesuits, equipment, and capsules; touch a real moon rock, and take a tour of the training and communications facilities at the Johnson Space Center. You can also sign up to take the special Level 9 Tour behind the scenes, or play Star Wars: The Clone Wars and spend the day shooting blaster light wands through a labyrinth or biking upside down.
