Travel Back in Time at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum

Some of the most authentic museum experiences are those that take place where history was actually made. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in Alexandria offers just that. The museum—which is just about three miles from The Shelby Apartments—is an old tavern and social meeting place turned historical landmark.

Gadsby’s Tavern was operated by John Gadsby from 1796 to 1808. The building became a popular meeting place for local politicians and businesspeople as well as a hub for entertainment. It’s proven that George Washington stayed at the tavern and also, on occasion, had events hosted there in his honor. Docents lead 30-minute tours of the house, which include an overview of period artifacts, such as furniture and historical documents. The museum also regularly hosts events that give guests the feel of the 19th century. Seasonal hours differ, so be sure to check the website before planning your trip.
