Austin’s Wood Fire Grill: Family Friendly, Wood Fired Fare

August 12, 2014 2:25 pm

Austin’s Wood Fire Grill is a reliable dinner option for Mayfield Village residents looking for great barbecue fare. This well-decorated restaurant features rustic wooden tables, dim, relaxing lighting, and a spacious wooden bar that makes an ideal happy hour hangout.

Almost everything on the menu is cooked over a wood fired grill, including the 100% Angus burgers, seafood entrees, and hand cut steaks. Slow smoked prime rib dinners are served every weekend, and the Smokin’ Favorites menu includes Texas barbecue pork, brisket, and hickory roasted chicken. The sides of smoked beans, macaroni and cheese, and cinnamon apples are just as good as the main courses, and most meat entrees are served with Austin’s signature Shiner Bock beer bread. Finish your meal with a piece of apple pie for the kids or a glass of wine for the adults, and you’ll leave feeling full and satisfied.

Austin’s is open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sundays through Fridays and noon to 10:30 Saturdays.

Easy Ways to Introduce More Calcium to Your Diet

August 5, 2014 1:22 pm

Dairy products are usually cited as the main food sources of calcium, which can be difficult for those who are lactose intolerant, vegan, or simply dislike dairy. Luckily there are a number of non-dairy sources of calcium that aren’t as well known, and many of them are quite surprising. Here are a few of the best.

  1. Nuts and seeds. Healthy snacks like nuts and seeds don’t just quell your hunger, they also provide you with a beneficial dose of calcium. Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, and chestnuts are some of the most calcium-rich nuts, and they taste great in salads or on their own. Seeds like tahini, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are also wonderful sources.
  2. Green vegetables. As if you needed another reason to eat your veggies, many greens are very high in calcium. In fact, it’s much easier for your body to digest vegetables like broccoli, kale, and spinach than it is to digest milk.
  3. Tofu. Everyone’s favorite meat substitute isn’t just a great source of protein, it’s also filled with healthful calcium. Many brands of tofu are fortified with a calcium sulfate, which can easily be found on the ingredient list.

July 29, 2014 12:32 pm

The Mayfield Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library system is an environmentally friendly building built entirely to LEED standards. While its main goal is to provide literature and other resources to the area’s residents, it also aims to teach visitors new ways to go green at home.

The library spans 30,000 square feet and just one floor, and it even offers access to Mayfield Village’s Greenway Trail. There is a dedicated community meeting room, a quiet reading area, and just about any type of book that you can imagine. For those looking to browse the Internet, this branch also offers 62 computers and power outlets where guests can charge their own laptops. Bring the kids to the Mayfield library branch and they can even take advantage of the building’s teen snack cart, game consoles, and the interactive children’s play area.

The library is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekends. Sunday hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
