Tomatina: Little Tomato

March 12, 2013 | sack

Walnut Creek’s Tomatina is known for its fresh Italian dining and named—if the paintings onsite are any indication—for the tomato-throwing festival that brings partiers from all over the Mediterranean to Valencia, Spain to throw the delicious red fruit at one another. Anyway, there’s a preponderance of appropriately sauced menu items here, from pizzas to piadines (a unique Italian flatbread sandwich with a salad on top). The piadines and garlic rolls in particular are very popular, though you can only really make a meal out of the former. Specials change on a day-to-day (say, half off a bottle of wine at dinner every Tuesday) and month-to-month basis, meaning there’s always something new to try at a fairly respectable price. The portions are sized well, the service is nice, and both indoor and outdoor seating are available, a boon for those customers who enjoy occasionally taking a meal al fresco.
