Sasa Walnut Creek: Fusion Small Plates

December 10, 2013 | sack

“Come to unwind, stay for the unexpected.”

That's the motto at Sasa Walnut Creek, a restaurant that produces small plates influenced by the flavors of Japanese cuisine. A Walnut Creek mainstay, Sasa has a lovely outdoor patio and a full bar, the combination of which certainly allows for guests to unwind. The unexpected is factored in where food is concerned. The tempura batter-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich, for example, is one menu item that has been put through its paces by the Sasa chef and developed a surprise following among the restaurant’s visitors. The ahi parfait—a “Sasa signature”—is another beloved dish. The fatty tuna, and other sashimi, is also remarkably good, winning the restaurant accolades not just for its interesting specialty dishes but also old Japanese restaurant standards. While the price can be a bit spendy, Sasa certainly lives up to its tagline for connoisseurs.
