Redwood Valley Railway: Chugging Along

May 10, 2013 | sack

The Redwood Valley Railway in Orinda is a remarkable little attraction for kids (and adults!) of all ages. Though they won’t take you through bustling towns and cities like the rail transport of old, the miniature live steam locomotives at Redwood Valley will take you on an old-fashioned ride through a beautiful park. The trains are about five feet, and the miniature buildings and towns you pass along the way are appropriately scaled down, but the gorgeous views of the Bay through the lovely redwood trees can even draw smiles from those who have hardened their hearts against such whimsy. The journey is about twelve minutes long—and remarkably inexpensive at $3 a pop, with children under the age of two riding for free. You can take your dog aboard too (also for free), and when you’re finished with the railway proper hike the surrounding trails (obviously also for free).
