As any parent knows, having a kid means opening the door to a tidal wave of waste and garbage. It’s important to teach kids that the Earth’s resources aren’t unlimited, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun doing it. Recycling-based art projects can teach kids about getting as much use as possible out of everything that they consume. Here are five fun starter ideas:
- Take a discarded milk carton and turn it into a birdhouse. Paint with water-resistant paints, cut a hole in the front for a door and put a popsicle stick in the front for birds to perch on. Fill the base with seed and watch the birds flock to it.
- A fun dress-up game is to make pig snouts out of discarded toilet paper tubes and pink felt. If you’re really ambitious, glue a few together to make an elephant trunk.
- Large cardboard boxes are one of the best things to inspire a kid’s imagination. You can use them to construct just about anything, from a princess castle to a space rocket.
- Old plastic soda bottles make great penguins with a little black and white paint. Using water-resistant paint will let your kids bring them into the bathtub as well.
- Bottle caps make fun decorative pieces – glue paper or paint shapes in the inside and attach a disc magnet to the back, then go crazy on the fridge.
