Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly-baked pita bread in the morning? Located in the heart of downtown San Jose, Sultan Bakery fills the neighborhood with that smell every week from Tuesday through Sunday. Sultan has been a wholesale operation for years, and when you step inside, you can’t help but notice the industrial conveyor belts loaded with hundreds of pitas that are distributed in restaurants and markets all over the region. More recently, however, the bakery decided to open a consumer-facing cafe, added a new pizza oven, and installed glass pastry and deli cases.

Today the menu features hot and cold mezze, flatbreads, and sandwich wraps in addition to Middle Eastern sweet treats like baklava, maamool, knefeh. Can’t-miss menu items, according to Yelp reviewers, include the crispy stuffed falafel wrap and the house-made baba ghanoush, thanks to its signature smoky flavor. Pro tip: get some extra pita to take home and enjoy with your leftovers!
