Learn More About Local History at the Indian Summer Festival on Sept. 8-10

September 4, 2017 | wimmer

For more than three decades, the Indian Summer Festival has helped the American Indian peoples to educate others about their respective histories and cultures. It will do the same this year, bringing a variety of entertainment, food, and learning opportunities to Henry Maier Festival Park from September 8th to the 10th.

This year's theme is "Language is Culture," an idea that permeates the American Indian narrative, especially locally, since most of the major Native groups in Wisconsin speak different languages that are totally distinct. Learn more about the tongues that characterize Siouxan, Iroquoian, and Algonquin culture as you participate in Education Day (September 8th) or check out the Living Cultures Area, where members of these groups share about their unique cultures. Other events on the itinerary including amateur boxing, art shows, and live music all weekend long. General admission tickets are $12 and can be purchased online here or at the festival.
