Enjoy a globally influenced menu of coffee and loose-leaf tea at Kean Coffee, a spacious Tustin cafe located in a bustling strip mall not too far from Coventry Court Apartments. Inside, Kean Coffee is cozy and polished, with an impressively large chandelier light fixture accenting the center of the room, soft, neutral decor, and handsome wooden tables throughout the seating area.

There are glass pastry cases filled to the brim with baked goods, as well as a spacious espresso bar where skilled baristas create each custom-made drink. Brewed coffees and traditional espresso drinks are served in ceramic mugs or takeaway cups, while seasonal lattes, Turkish lattes, and brewed black teas make unique and flavorful alternatives for those who want to mix up their usual coffee routine.

The Kean Coffee location in Tustin opens at 6 a.m. daily.

Espresso Drinks Are Made With Care at Kéan Coffee

You could say that coffee is in Martin Diedrich’s blood. The coffee entrepreneur traces his roots to Costa Rican and Guatemalan coffee plantations, and his family started importing beans to California in 1972.

After building the internationally successful Diedrich Coffee chain in the 1980s and 90s, Diedrich founded Kéan Coffee to put the focus back on the beans. From roasting to pouring to maintenance, Diedrich talks about coffee with the love, care, and detail usually reserved for fine wine. The goal, he says, is to restore “coffee culture,” the leisurely appreciation of coffee in all its mystery—coffee as the center of family, business, and relaxation. Coffee beans, many of which are organic and fair-trade, are roasted on-site at Diedrich's cafe, imparting a whole-bodied, nuanced flavor to Kéan's coffee drinks.

Kéan Coffee's Tustin location is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Guatemala-born coffee impresario Martin Diedrich has java in his blood—his family owned a small coffee farm, and he grew up watching beans planted and harvested. After exploring a career in archaeology, he moved to America to help his family with their roaster business. From there, it was a short step to opening his own café, and in 2005 he opened Kéan with his wife in a spot not far from Coventry Court Apartments.
