Sake 2 Me Sushi: All-You-Can Eat Sushi With a Side of Sake

Tustin's Sake 2 Me Sushi considers each customer a member of its family. So don't be surprised by the customer photos that cover its walls—they're the family photo album. And snapping a picture is just one way that the staff makes its guests feel at home. They might surprise you with a complimentary bite to eat or nip of sake before you even order, since they value creating community almost as highly as crafting fresh, inventive sushi.

Enjoy an endless sampling of the sushi at all-you-can-eat lunch or dinner, where a flat rate of $19.95 (lunch) or $23.95 (dinner) covers virtually every sushi roll. Try a salmon hand roll, baked lobster California roll, or specialty roll like the Heaven In Ya Mouth (stick crab, mango, avocado, asparagus, romaine lettuce gobo in soy paper). And then wash it down with sake, soju, or another tasty libation.

Rutabegorz: A Little Of Everything

Since opening in Fullerton in 1970, Rutabegorz has striven to provide healthy, natural foods to the communities surrounding its three locations, and the Tustin branch is no different. The menu at Ruta’s—so large and varied it resembles a book—is largely deli- and vegetarian-inspired but with a health-conscious ethos informing its cooking and the availability of its items. Carnivores ought to try the light yet filling garlic chicken salad or the Cockie Leeky soup (which also contains chicken) while guests who eschew the consumption of animals will enjoy a meal of vegetarian lasagna, a Dala Salad, or a falafel wrap. There are two dining rooms and as such plenty of seating, with tables outside for those so inclined, and the place has an ambience that matches what you would expect for a restaurant of this type. The portions here are more than enough for the fair prices, and service is generally very good.

Honda-Ya: Japanese Fare

Izakaya, a portmanteau composed of the Japanese words for “to stay” and “sake shop”, refers to a place where you can eat, drink, and relax, and by that definition Tustin’s Honda-Ya fits the bill. Guests can choose to be seated at the bar, at a table, or on the tatami floor. Start with an appetizer like the crab shumai or takoyaki, then move onto an entrée like the delicious bacon-wrapped asparagus, one of the most popular items on the menu. For those seeking libations, Honda Ya offers an excellent selection of beer, sake, and even Japan’s other indigenous beverage, shochu. Green tea ice cream makes for a great dessert, especially on your birthday when it comes free. Ambience is casual, though as a fairly popular spot the restaurant can sometimes get loud. The portions can be a little small, so keep your eye on the price to make sure you don’t overspend.

Full Moon Sushi: Catch Of The Day

Full Moon Sushi in Tustin provides fresh sushi and sashimi with attentive customer service at great prices. The grilled wheat cake with shrimp, poke, and gyoza appetizers are all an excellent way to begin a meal and the Hawaiian roll or choices off the special menu like the Full Moon or Cucumber special rolls are delicious sushi and sashimi choices for the discerning diner. Full Moon Sushi regulars love poke, a type of Hawaiian raw fish salad, in all its forms on the menu—there are rolls, poke salad, and a poke bowl. Sake, Kirin beer, and teas are available to quench guests’ thirst, too. The portions of sashimi and fish on offer are generous, customer service is friendly and attentive, and prices range from reasonable to excellent.

Peter’s Gourmade Grill: Burger Bests

Peter’s Gourmade Grill has come a long way since its previous location inside a Valero gas station on the edge of Tustin. Word of mouth and a couple excellent write-ups in local Orange County papers propelled the restaurant to success and in early 2012 it moved to the corner of McFadden and Newport Avenues. Stop into the new location for an ABC Burger—the letters stand for avocado, bacon, cheddar—or the Mushroom Swiss Bacon Burger, two of the best in the OC. The Greek fries are often the subject of rave reviews as well. Those less inclined to enjoy a burger can dig into a basil chicken sandwich or a gyro and even vegetarians will enjoy a veggie burger homemade from Peter’s own recipe. Seating is limited, especially as this spot rockets upward in popularity, but the service is good (you can even text in an order) and the food is definitely worth the reasonable price.

Pina’s Bistro: Neapolitan Style

Established in 1995 by Pina, an immigrant from Naples, Pina’s Bistro specializes in authentic regional Italian cuisine made to order with fine ingredients. The fried mozzarella, served with marinara sauce, is a particularly memorable appetizer, but regardless of whether you choose to order one or not Pina’s bread is homemade, fresh, and delicious. All entrees come with a complimentary house salad of a decent size. The gnocchi makes for an excellent meal but among the most highly prized items on the Pina’s menu is the sausage, which is made fresh daily and available as a side for those whose entrée do not include it. The lemoncello cake and tiramisu are very good desserts and a nice way to finish up a meal. The atmosphere is welcoming and the service is as friendly as you’d hope from a family-owned restaurant.
