Union Oyster House: Toothpicks, Kennedys, & the Best Oysters in Town

November 20, 2012 | greystar

Open since 1826, Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in town, and probably the country. The toothpick was invented here, and JFK planned his meteoric rise from a cozy booth upstairs. (It’s now decorated in his honor.) But this is no dusty “heritage” experience.  The lights are low, the wood is dark, the beer is cold … why tinker with perfection? A dozen fresh grilled Cape Cod oysters and a frosty Sam Adams will run you less than 20 bucks. Entrees are pricier, but it’s like attending the best clambake in the world; fresh scrod filet ($21.95) is topped with a superlative breadcrumb blend, and lobsters (market price) are sweet, meaty monsters. If you dare, indulge in the American Bouillabaisse (market price), an overwhelming blend of lobster, steamers, mussels, shrimp, fish, littlenecks and scallops poached in a savory broth. Each ingredient is cooked with separate, loving attention, and the result is stunning. And don’t miss the cornbread; it ranks with the best in the world. Union Oyster House is open Sunday – Thursday until 9.30, and Friday – Saturday until 10.  The bar is open until midnight.
