How to Remove Stubborn Grass, Oil and Sweat Stains

You're elated that your child's slide into homebase cinched the game; you're not so happy about the grass stain that you need to remove when you get home. Keep these stain-fighting tips handy so you can meet common household stains with a plan of attack.

To remove grass stains:
This tip should help save Junior's uniform: As soon as possible, pretreat the grass stain with liquid detergent, then rinse thoroughly. If the garment can be bleached (check the label), then soak the garment in a diluted solution of bleach and water for no longer than fifteen minutes. If you'd prefer to steer clear of bleach, you can try rubbing a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda into the grass stain, letting it sit, then rinsing.

To remove oil-based stains:
Oil-based stains include mayonnaise, salad dressings, cooking oils, butter, face creams, and grease. First, apply talcum powder or cornstarch directly to the stain; this will help absorb the oil but may require several applications. Scrape or brush off the powder between applications, then toss the garment into the wash on a regular cycle.

To remove sweat stains:
Sweat stains are equally embarrassing and stubborn, but can be conquered if you follow the correct steps. Attack the stain with a cocktail of equal parts water and lemon juice, then hang the garment outside in the sunshine. (You'll need nice weather for this one.) The sunlight will help bleach the stain.

5 Fast Facts About Mount Rushmore

You know it as that big mountain with some old presidents’ faces carved into it, but what else do you know about Mount Rushmore? Mount Rushmore is a historical landmark that’s a fascinating part of our country’s history. Here are a few fun facts about the massive sculpture.

1. Mount Rushmore’s construction began on October 4, 1927.
Gutzon Borglum created the huge sculpture, and it took 400 workers over 14 years to build. It cost just $989,992.32 at the time.

2. It is named after Charles E. Rushmore.
Rushmore was a prominent New York City attorney in the late 1800s. He visited the Black Hills in 1884, and his tour guide promised that they would name the now-famous mountain after him.

3. Most of the sculpture was created with dynamite.
Over 90% of the faces were sculpted out of dynamite, though the smaller details were sculpted using chisels and jackhammers.

4. Each face is 60 feet high.
That’s approximately as tall as a six-story building. George Washington’s nose alone is 21 feet long!

5. Mount Rushmore sees almost 3 million visitors per year.
The National Park Service maintains and cares for the giant sculpture and also oversees the mountain’s annual visitation.

5 Tips for Organizing Your Bathroom

It’s one of the most-used rooms in your home, which is probably why it's so difficult to keep a bathroom spic and span. Stop fighting through a mess of toothbrushes, damp towels, beauty supplies, and crumbling bars of soap and vow to get your bathroom organized with these five brilliant tips.

  1. Tackle that medicine cabinet. Because medicine cabinets have shelves, many of us use that as an excuse to overstuff them with loose products. Take everything out, clean those shelves with an all-purpose cleaner, and add a few bins or small jars to keep loose items organized.
  2. Keep towels off of the ground. Add a basket on the floor to keep a surplus of damp towels from accumulating on the floor.
  3. Divide drawers. Just because your sink has three drawers doesn’t mean they can only accommodate three types of products. Divide your drawers by using drawer organizers to split things up in more than the allotted ways.
  4. Make use of the garbage can. It’s safe to say that we all have a few items in the bathroom that are expired or unused. Go through all of your beauty products, soaps, shampoos, and medicines and pitch those outdated items.
  5. Add affordable storage. If you notice that you’re lacking the proper storage for certain items, make it yourself. Overturned wooden crates or decorative baskets are attractive examples for holding clean towels or toilet paper rolls.
