Cookbooks Every Cook Should Own

It's no secret that having a good selection of cookbooks on hand will greatly broaden your meal repertoire. But with so many available today, how do you know which ones are worth investing in? Below are a few books that any cook must have within arm's reach.

How To Cook Everything by Mark Bittman
Popular food writer Bittman is one of the best recipe developers alive today, and his cookbooks are easily readable and simple to follow. His massive collection covers the wide world of Western cooking with panache, and almost every recipe has a number of variations that allow you to spread your wings and make it your own.

The Silver Palate Cookbook by Sheila Lukins and Julie Rosso
This book is a classic, and was a must-have in all kitchens in the 1990s. And, luckily, it’s aged beautifully. The team of Lukins and Rosso present impressive, innovative dishes that draw from many different cultures, and all their directions are both clear and concise.

Complete Techniques by Jacques Pepin
This master of French food lays out the most vital skills a chef can acquire in this magnificently illustrated book. Although the recipes in this work are not the main selling point, they are still quite good. More importantly, this cookbook will help you learn how to handle yourself like a chef in your kitchen.

Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook by Martha Stewart
Baking can confuse even the best of chefs, as it asks you to be both a cook and a chemist. In Martha's encyclopedic volume, she presents a vast assortment of breads and sweets in intense detail (true to Martha Stewart form).

Morelia Mexican Grill: Not Your Typical Tex-Mex Cuisine

Morelia Mexican Grill in Round Rock is not your typical Tex-Mex food. The family hails from Morelia, Mexico and the menu offers traditional and authentic food.  Of course you can find your favorite Mexican items like Burritos and Tacos, but what makes Morelia stand out is a varied menu with more options than is typical of Mexican food.  In addition to standard beef, chicken and shrimp fajitas, the grill offers combos that feature quail and ribs.  If you like enchiladas, they have 10 to choose from, including crawfish enchiladas with a cajun cream sauce. In fact, their special sauces are found throughout the menu and range from ranchero to mole and spicy cream. The atmosphere is casual and murals transform the walls making the bar look like Mayan carved stone. Bar beverages are more than just margaritas and include traditional drinks like a Charro Negro, a refreshing combination of Tequila and Coke.

The Frisco: Dine in Retro Style in Austin

The Frisco is everything a diner should be, retro decor, comfort food, and breakfast served all day.  The last surviving restaurant of the historic Night Hawk chain, it has been feeding Austin for 60 years.  The large menu offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites from flakey biscuits to beefy burgers.  Customers love the chicken fried steak, with a good breading ratio and light gravy.  Homemade pies show off in glass cases – don’t skip out on their famous coconut cream pie.  Whether you sit at the counter or in a booth, service is consistent and friendly at The Frisco.  Take a walk around the restaurant and check out the Austin memorabilia that lines the walls.
