Crawfish Shack and Oyster Bar: Back to the Bayou

Next time you’re looking for a casual and flavorful seafood meal, consider stopping at Crawfish Shack and Oyster Bar.  This neighborhood restaurant offers simple cajun dishes like catfish po’boys, hushpuppies, and live crawfish cooked to order. The prices are reasonable and portions are generous.  Many regulars always start their meal with the Crawfish Shack’s homemade gumbo, others swear by the crab legs.  Their seasoning is on the mild side, so if you are looking to give your tastebuds a big kick, order your meal spicy.  The decor is fun and casual, and with quick service, the Crawfish Shack makes a great lunch spot!  They also offer take out, if you’d rather make a buttery mess of yourself at home. Their menu is almost entirely seafood, but definitely fresh. There is free wifi and several TVs to catch the game.

2013 Summer Fan Drive

It's time for the Summer Fan Drive!

For 23 years, Central Texas has rallied under the hot, Texas sun to bring relief and comfort to vulnerable seniors, adults with disabilities, and families. By Joining in on the Summer Fan Drive, we all can be a critical part of this effort!

How much can a fan really help?

When Family Eldercare knocks at the door of an older adult to deliver a fan, a connection is made. When they talk to that person, they may find that he or she is lonely, hungry, isolated, suffering abuse, or has unmet needs that can be addressed through one of other several programs offered by Family Eldercare. Not only do they supply fans, but each interaction gives Family Eldercare a chance to assess each situation to see if other issues need to be addressed as well.

So, what do we do to help?

The Summer Fan Drive asks that people donate NEW 20" box fans or NEW 12" (or larger) oscillating fans. The fans must be in NEW and in original packaging because of liability issues. They also accept donations. Preferably, donations should be made in $15 increments because a typical, 20" box fan is $15. NEW high-efficiency window a/c units can be donated as well.

For more information click here.

Please drop off any donations in the office by June 18th.

Inka Chicken: Peruvian Fusion Fare

Inka Chicken is Austin’s Peruvian fusion restaurant serving up one main dish – charcoal rotisserie chicken.  Although they only offer the chicken entree, you won’t be disappointed – the meat is moist and flavorful.  Ordering is easy and you can choose from several combinations of chicken portions, sides and sauces.   American side choices include steak fries, rice, mac and cheese, corn on the cob, and a veggie medley.  If you want more authentic South American fare, choose the yucca fries and fried plantains.  Order tortillas, rice and a veggie medley to create a wrap.  Their desserts are also authentic – try the tres leches cake.  Casual dining is enhanced with a smokey aroma from the charcoal rotisserie.  Service is friendly and happy to help explain the menu and cooking process.  With a drive through, you’ll never go back to the supermarket version!

Five Effective Anxiety-Management Techniques

Anxiety is a plague that affects millions of Americans. As today’s high-stress world makes things increasingly difficult, more people are looking for ways to self-soothe and release tension. Here are five techniques that you can do at home, prescribed by experts in the field.

Breathing is widely considered the most important thing you can do to manage the onset of anxiety symptoms. Anxiety generates real physical reactions in the body, but by performing controlled, even breathing you can mitigate many of those symptoms and prevent the attack from getting worse.

Mindful awareness is another common method used to deal with the early stages of an anxiety attack. Close your eyes and slow your breath, concentrating your focus on different parts of your body in turn. This will give you the understanding that you are in control of your attentions.

Try to avoid worrying. This is easier said than done, obviously, but most doctors agree that feelings of dread or concern for the future engender anxiety attacks. A simple cognitive therapy response is to note the worry and then reply to yourself silently “That’s just my brain worrying. I know I don’t have to worry.”

Avoid recursive or ruminant thoughts on negative experiences. Getting the brain caught in a thought loop can lead to serious anxiety, lost productivity and more. Being conscious of these loops and working to stop them with mental commands can give you increased control over your situation.

Most importantly, make sure your body is getting everything it needs to be healthy. Getting enough sleep and regular, nutritious meals will help your brain functionality as well.
