The Little Deli is Big on Pizza

The Little Deli brings New York to Austin.

Although this place has Deli in the name, what the pizza makes it a gem. It's thin-crust New York-style, with homemade dough hand-tossed and baked on a two inch stone hearth to create a chewy crust. You can order by the slice, or whole pie. If you’re ordering a whole pizza, you can create your own from their long list of toppings with traditional veggies and more artisan options such as roasted eggplant, sun dried tomatoes, and pesto sauce. Or, you can try one of their specialties like the Bacon Blue that is topped with Gorgonzola and red bell peppers. There is limited seating inside, but outdoor seating is plentiful.

The Little Deli is BYOB so you can place your order and then pick up a beverage at the supermarket next door. It can get busy for lunch — regulars suggest calling ahead to place your order if you want to avoid a wait.

Trying to Lose Weight? Discover Your Ideal Caloric Intake

We’ve all been conditioned to read nutritional labels on our food to evaluate how healthy it is. And, with so many 100-calorie snacks available today, it's easy to forget the true issue — your total caloric intake! So, how many calories do you really need in a day?

The answer to that age old question is a bit more complex than you might expect. Your ideal daily calorie intake depends on many factors, including your weight (and your target weight, if you're trying to lose pounds). Also, you have to consider if you have an active or a sedentary lifestyle, whether you’re trying to lose some weight, and of course, whether you are currently or soon plan to be pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are in decent health, you can get a general idea of your caloric needs by filling these values into an online calorie calculator. Keep in mind, however, if you are in poor health or are under a doctor’s treatment, it is best to talk to your doctor before you establish a daily calorie goal for yourself. Also, if you are setting a goal for weight loss, it might be helpful to talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to help you set realistic, healthy goals.

Odaku Sushi: Korean and Japanese Cuisine Favorites

Odaku Sushi in Austin is a quiet spot to enjoy Korean and Japanese food. Their menu has a wide variety of traditional Japanese sushi and sashimi. Their maki specialities are artful and creative such as the dragon dance, which crafts crab, cucumber, eel, avocado and other flavors to resemble a Chinese dragon. Bento boxes – especially the lunch specials – are highly recommended; the portions are generous and include a variety of tastes at a reasonable price. Although sushi is in the name, many come for the Korean menu, which offers many favorites, including juicy BBQ meats like bulgogi and gal bi. They play a fun mix of Asian pop music – so the food isn’t the only thing that will make you smile. The restaurant is a good place if you are looking to take your time savoring the food.

Most Important Philosophers of All Time

Philosophy is, in a nutshell, the study of the human experience – how we understand and react to the world. There have been a number of important thinkers who developed the discipline, but these five philosophers are the ones that you need to know.

Plato
The founder of the first school of higher education in the Western world, Plato’s teachings inspired virtually every future thinker in Western philosophy. His theories of forms, immaterial abstractions that possess the true nature of their material counterparts, is vital for study of philosophy.

Aristotle
Without Aristotle’s development of written systems to analyze and criticize, the development of philosophy would have been very different. His teachings covered an incredibly broad spectrum of subjects.

Rene Descartes
Widely regarded as the father of modern philosophy, Descartes was not only a great thinker who advanced the concept of dualism, he also developed Cartesian geometry, one of the most important mathematical breakthroughs of the 17th century.

Confucius
The central thinker of Eastern philosophy, Master Kong Qiu, who we know as Confucius, was born in 551 BC and helped make the empires of China some of the most robust on Earth. His systems of morals and ethics paralleled and even surpassed the ones being developed in Greece at the same time.

John Locke
Regarded as the “Father of Liberalism,” philosopher John Locke brought concepts of humanism and universal freedom into the arena of thought. He was a huge influence on the framers of the Constitution and the first Presidents of the United States.

Ballet Austin: On Point

Austin is a culturally rich city, boasting a fair number of highbrow performance groups. One of the most long-lived and praised is Ballet Austin, which has been putting on impressive performances for over 50 years. Under the direction of Stephen Mills, the company encompasses 20 professional dancers recruited from a nationwide talent search, staging five productions yearly, including an extremely popular presentation of The Nutcracker. The productions are uniformly elegant and sensual, with talented dancers and engrossing choreography. Regulars rave about the avant-garde spin that Mills and company put on staid classics. In addition to their professional performances, Ballet Austin hosts a number of educational programs which draw locals in droves. The classes are held on a drop-in basis at The Butler Center, ranging from traditional ballet and tap to more unique offerings like hip-hop, Pilates and “Broadway Fit.” Prices are reasonable and the instructors are top notch.
