Opportunity to Help Clean Up Walking Trail

This Saturday is “It’s My Park Day” and the neighborhood behind us will be removing litter and giving the trails behind the property a spring cleaning! This will be sponsored by Austin Parks Foundation.

If you are interested in helping out cleaning up the walking trails, the cleaning is on Saturday, March 2nd from 9 a.m. to noon. We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come out and help. You will also be able to get a free t-shirt. For more information, you can contact the office.

The Jalopy: Classic Cuisine

Need a bite to eat? Look for the giant, brightly painted truck and get ready to chow down at The Jalopy. Everything is made in-house in their mobile kitchen, including bread, salsas, pickles, and veggie chips. They also brine their chicken, so it’s super moist and succulent. Chicken sandwiches include the El Campo with chipotle adobo sauce, cabbage & pickled peppers, the Gadd Thai with coconut peanut sauce, sriracha & pickled onions, and the Suite 709 with tomatillo cilantro pesto, fresh herbs & red cabbage. Some creatively inspired veggie sandwiches are also on the menu, like the Butler with double cream brie, apples, almonds & agave nectar and the Jelly Gibson with peanut butter, onion marmalade, almonds & berries. Open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch.

Baking Tip: How To Successfully Double A Recipe

Have you doubled a recipe, only to have the end result look nothing like it did when you made just a single batch? Well, you're not alone. Baking is a science, and calls for very exact measurements. The next time you're baking up a storm, check out these tips from The Kitchn about how to double a recipe:

Cakes, Muffins, and Cookies
Even if you're doubling all the other ingredients, be careful not to double baking soda, baking powder, yogurt, and buttermilk. The amounts of these ingredients need to be changed when you're doubling everything else — otherwise the recipe may not quite work.

Breads
Most breads contain yeast rather than baking powder or baking soda. Beneficially so, since yeast can be doubled without much of an issue. However, a kitchen scale makes it much simpler to do, since you'll be measuring by volume rather than sight.

Enchiladas y Mas: Down-Home Tex-Mex Cuisine

Enchiladas y Mas is a cozy little spot that serves up some of Austin’s favorite Tex-Mex food.  Since 1994 this family-owned restaurant has relied on their family recipes to fill bellies and and put smiles on customers’ faces. They love the saying ‘never trust a skinny cook’ — leave your calorie counter at home and get ready to indulge in cheese smothered goodness.  Regulars love the spicy salsa and guacamole.  Entrees are generously portioned and don’t hide the meat.  Their specialties are enchiladas and fajitas — which have won many awards, including best fajitas from the Austin American-Statesman. This recognition can make for a busy restaurant, but the food is worth the wait. You can pass the time enjoying a margarita or Mexican beer at the bar. Remember, the art is in the food …

Stick to Your New Year’s Exercise Resolutions in 2013

We're nearly into 2013 and many of us are already beginning to think about our New Year's resolutions. If your goals are fitness-related, keep the momentum going and follow these simple steps to starting and sticking with an exercise program.

Be realistic about your limits
Look at your schedule, your interests, and your current fitness level when selecting an exercise program. Be honest with yourself – taking on more than you can handle will only be discouraging. Make your goal something manageable and remember, small steps can have big results!

Try a few different workouts
Take your time finding an exercise style that appeals to you. The more you like it, the more likely you'll be to stick with it. Be open-minded and ask your friends and family for their favorite workout ideas – you never know what might work for you until you try it.

Set goals for yourself
Pick something that is challenging but within reach. Once you’ve met your goal, set a new one. Do something to reward yourself every time you meet a goal to keep your motivation at its peak.

Make exercise part of your daily routine
Try walking or biking all or part of your commute to and from work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, every day. Work out while you’re watching TV. Build exercise into your routine and soon you won't know how to live without it!

Work out with friends
Set up a weekly walk, run or gym date with friends. You’ll have more fun, and you will serve as each other’s motivation. Also, it's a great way to hang out and visit with one another without going out to eat or for drinks.
