Radiance Yoga Studio Proves That Yoga Can Bump Up the Heart Rate

Regardless of the type of workout you're craving, you'll be able to find it at Radiance Yoga Studio. If you've always considered yoga a passive activity, it's time to reshape your thinking. This yoga studio offers a variety of athletic modalities that will get your heart pumping and blood flowing almost as much as a run on the treadmill.

Check out a Kundalini yoga class if you're looking for a challenging sweat session. Also known as the "yoga of awareness," Kundalini incorporates quick-moving, rhythmic movements designed to not only strengthen the core, but also make the entire body more flexible. Yin yoga, on the other hand, fortifies the joints and connective tissues by holding asanas for longer than usual (about 5 minutes each). Radiance also offers standard Flow classes, not to mention restorative and prenatal yoga for those seeking a slower practice.

Finger Food Takes on New Meaning at Hawwi Ethiopian Cafe & Restaurant

Regulars at Hawwi Ethiopian Cafe & Restaurant will tell you that if you've never tried Ethiopian food, you're missing out. The first item you should become familiar with at this Alexandria restaurant is injera, the ever-present pancake-like bread that traditionally serves as both plate and utensil. In other words, your food is served atop a round of injera, and you eat by ripping off bits of injera and using them to scoop a bit of food up to your mouth.

If you're not sure what to order, try a "sampler" plate for the whole table, which mirrors a traditional Ethiopian dining style in which many different dishes are served on a single large round of injera that everyone at the table shares. Try simmered red lentils cooked in berbere sauce, braised beef with onions and herbs, and pureed chickpeas with tomatoes and green peppers.

Don't worry if you're just not sure what to order. The staff is friendly and happy to explain the menu or offer suggestions, especially for first-time visitors.

How to Add Mixed Patterns to Your Apartment’s Decor

Think it takes a decorator’s eye to mix patterns? Think again! With a few smart tips and some simple rules to keep in mind, you can mix patterns like the pros in any room in your home.

  1. Choose a color scheme. First, pick a color scheme that you’ll stick with throughout the room. Whether it’s basic black and white or something brighter, like yellow and blue, this will make your pattern mixing much easier.
  2. Limit the number of patterns. While it may seem overwhelming to mix a dozen different patterns, even the most novice home decorator can work with three or four. Keep things simple, but still incredibly impactful.
  3. Decide where you’ll mix your patterns. Adding a variety of different throw pillows on the sofa or the bed is one of the most popular ways to incorporate a few different patterns in a room, but you might also want to add even more fun prints. For even more depth and dimension, try a temporary wallpaper in a big, bold pattern, or use a funky rug with simpler throw pillows and curtains.
  4. Make your own. If you’re having a hard time finding pillowcases or curtains in patterns that go together, try creating your own! It’s very easy to sew these items at home, and some tutorials don’t even involve any sewing at all.

Pho Factory: Don’t Miss the Pho Dac Biet

Americans might not think of soup as an entree, but Vietnamese eaters regularly make broth-based bowls the main event at meals. One of the most iconic types of Asian soup is pho, a typically beef-based eat chock full of fresh meat and veggies. At Pho Factory in Alexandria, guests can gobble up this surprisingly filling Vietnamese soup.

If you aren't sure which version to order, stick with the basics and get the classic pho dac biet. It incorporates virtually every style of beef, including rare steak, beef brisket, flank steak, and tendon. Mixed with rice, bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno, and lime in a flavorful broth, the eclectic meats make for a hearty meal. You can also opt for the seafood pho, which boasts shrimp, calamari, fried fish balls, and imitation crab in lieu of beef. Or take a spoon to the chicken pho instead, known formally as pho ga.

Oxon Hill Farm: Take a Visit to a Working Farm (and Even Milk a Cow!)

If you want to get out of the city and back to nature, do it on a working farm minutes away from Alexandria at Oxon Hill Farm. The rangers of Oxon Cove Park run the farm, and they’re very knowledgeable about all of the animals and machinery located on the grounds. You’ll often see area students on field trips to learn about the inner workings of the farm, but no matter your age, you can soak up a bit of background information about the history of the area.

Stroll through the grounds and check out the chickens, goats, pigs, and horses, then if you’re feeling particularly brave, go inside the barn and learn how to milk one of the friendly dairy cows. Finish off your visit with a hayride and a visit to the bookstore!
