Freddy Hill Farms: Swing a Few Clubs, Scoop a Few Flavors

“Everyone can find something to love here” is the slogan of Freddy Hill Farms Family Fun Center in Lansdale, and it is not difficult to see why. This still-working farm on Sumneytown Pike offers visitors two separate miniature golf courses, a newly refurbished driving range, plus hay rides, a corn maze, and a petting zoo.

Local families flock to Freddy Hill Farms for good clean fun in the fresh air with no video screens, blaring music, or flashing lights. To locals, however, Freddy Hill is best known for its house-made ice cream, which has been named among the best in the Greater Philadelphia area by area media outlets. Butter Brickle, Cookie Monster, and Apple Pie are just a few of the specialty flavors this place makes, and all can be purchased by the scoop or by the half gallon. You can also buy the freshest dairy products available, directly from the farm itself; think gallons of milk in whole, low-fat, skim, or chocolate varieties.

Wishing everyone a happy Memorial Day as we remember the many heroes who have served our country.

For a Wild Time, Take the Family Out to Elmwood Park Zoo

For almost a century, Elmwood Park Zoo has worked to educate Pennsylvanians on the importance of animal and habitat conservation. This little zoo in Norristown is also fully accredited, so you can rest assured that the animals are cared for and the facilities are above board.

The zoo provides a home for over a hundred species of animals, including bald eagles, timber wolves, howler monkeys and giraffes. True, Elmwood Park isn't nearly as large as the Philadelphia Zoo; however, past visitors say that for families with young children, the Elmwood Park Zoo is just the right size! It's large enough to keep the kids entertained, but not so big as to overwhelm or exhaust the little ones. Another perk: There's an on-site ice cream parlor as well as a small cafe, and you can pack your own picnic lunch.

Parking is free, but the lot does get crowded on busy days, so make sure you arrive early on weekends.

The Top 5 Most Fragrant Fresh-Cut Flowers

Flowers look beautiful in your home, but you also love them for the lovely scent they emit throughout your space. If you want to fill your home with the unmistakable aroma of fresh-cut blooms, these are the top five best flowers to choose.

  • Lavender. The purple-blue flowers on the lavender plant are instantly recognizable, as are the blooms' soothing, relaxing fragrance. Best of all, lavender flowers last a relatively long time, so you’ll really get your money’s worth.
  • Roses. The flower of love is also one of the best when it comes to floral fragrance. While most common floral shop roses don’t have much of a scent, heirloom and garden roses smell fresh and sweet.
  • Peonies. These herbaceous flowers bloom in late spring and early summer, and their large, showy petals prove them to be as eye-catching as they are fragrant. Peonies boast a citrus-y, woodsy scent.
  • Hyacinth. This spring plant has tight, clustered flowers in shades of blue, white, and pink, and its scent is similar to a sweeter type of lavender.
  • Lilac. Lilac flowers grow on larger trees and bushes, but they are often cut for bouquets. Although they only last for around five days in a vase, their soft, sweet scent is well worth their short lifespan!

Norristown Farm Park: 690 Acres’ Worth of Outdoor Recreation

Norristown Farm Park is one of Montgomery County’s most treasured public resources and one of the region’s most unique parks. This sprawling preserve spans 690 acres of land and attracts visitors of various interests.

Nature lovers appreciate the unspoiled landscapes and diverse wildlife. Fitness enthusiasts enjoy miles of paved running, biking, and walking trails, as well as baseball and volleyball facilities. Sportsmen can enjoy trout fishing in two stocked streams or set up at Farm Pond. History buffs might visit some colonial-era structures that are among Norristown’s oldest buildings. Locals also utilize the park’s multiple picnic areas and pavilions for parties, reunions, weddings, and other special events.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of Norristown Farm Park, however, is that it continues to operate as a working farm. Nearly 80 percent of the park is active farmland, which allows visitors to get a close-up view of the agricultural process.

The Melting Pot: Fondue in King of Prussia

Check out The Melting Pot, a fun fondue eatery offering an interactive dining experience. For the uninitiated, fondue hails from Switzerland, where in its most basic form, it consists of a simmering pot of melted cheese placed on the table in which cubes of bread are dipped with a long fork.

The Melting Pot lets you choose from a variety of fondue options, including several types of cheeses, as well as oil, and broth for cooking little chunks of meat and veggies. Meat, poultry, vegetables, artisan bread and seafood are the choices for dipping. Don’t skip dessert, because few things are as delightfully decadent as fresh berries dipped in chocolate. An expansive wine selection, beer and cocktails are also available.

How to Select Only the Freshest Veggies in the Produce Aisle

Fresh vegetables have a shorter lifespan than their frozen counterparts, so you likely want to make them last as long as possible when you purchase them. Use these expert tips to help you maintain a healthy diet and maximize the lifespan of your produce.

  1. Choose firm veggies. Vegetables like cucumbers, peppers, and onions should be firm, even colored, and free of bruises or other signs of damage. Be sure to pick these vegetables up in your hands and feel for consistent texture all the way around.
  2. Know your leafy greens. Green vegetables like spinach, kale, and lettuce should be crisp and brightly colored, with no visible signs of wilting or rot. You can also give these leafy vegetables a good whiff before buying to make sure that they don’t smell moldy.
  3. Inspect your root vegetables. The best potatoes, carrots, garlic, and other root vegetables may be a bit trickier to identify, but these simple tips can help: Look for cracking along the surface of the vegetable (an indicator that it's too dry), and be sure to avoid root veggies that smell rotten or moldy.
  4. Know your farmers' market veggies. If you regularly buy your produce at a supermarket, keep in mind that these types of stores use different techniques to make veggies look perfect. While farmers' market vegetables may not look as pretty, they’re still just as tasty.
