This lush, green park is more spacious than most, and it even contains paved hiking trails that wind their way through the park’s thick forests.

Bring your family or your friends from Avana Southgate to set out on a nature hike at this natural area, which contains a 2.4-mile scenic loop. Climb to the top of the park’s large hills to take in the incredible views, or even hop on your bike and spend the afternoon pedaling around the bike-friendly trails. Cherokee Park also contains a members-only dog park that is a great option for anyone who owns a dog in the city.

Discover New Authors at the Louisville Free Public Library

If you’re looking for a way to really immerse yourself in the Louisville community, becoming a member of the Louisville Free Public Library is a great option. This longtime area resource is home to thousands of books and other types of reading materials, from periodicals and research books to magazines and historical documents. There is a large children’s section that the little ones will love, and it frequently hosts story times and other family-friendly activities that you’ll have access to with a library card.

The building itself is very large and architecturally beautiful, as Tachau and Pilcher Architects of New York City designed it way back in 1906. There are stone columns out front and intricate décor throughout the inside, while the contemporary North Building, designed by Louis and Henry Architects of Louisville, added on to the library’s campus later on in 1969.

From Archery to BMX Biking, Outdoor Activities Are Many at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park

An archery range. Tennis courts. A public pool. These are just a handful of the amenities you'll find at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park, a sprawling outdoor space in Louisville. It spans 550 acres and has been an integral part of the city's landscape since 1970. Before that point, the land had served various purpose in the community, acting as farmland and even the site of a mental health institution at one point. Today, it's all about outdoor recreation.

When the summer warms up, many local families bring their kids along to the large pool. Dogs are welcome on the winding walking trails as long as they stay on-leash, so have them join you while you do a loop of the one-mile fitness trail or meander along the 1.25-mile goose creek trail. There's a fenced-in dog park, too, where they can run free with dogs their own size (it's divided into a single area for small dogs, and two areas for everyone else). From badminton to basketball, your can play virtually any sport at the state part. There's even a BMX park that garners acclaim from all over the nation.

Zipline Beneath the City at Louisville Mega Cavern

The Louisville Mega Cavern kind of came about by accident. It started as a limestone quarry, one that grew ever larger over the course of four decades of mining. When mining stopped, private investors were greeted with an opportunity to give back to the earth that had so willingly acquiesced its limestone. In 1989, they started transforming the cave using recycled brick, concrete, rock, block, and dirt. They used these elements to make underground roads and smooth floors, constructing a storage facility and, eventually, offices. The man-made cavern is one of the biggest anywhere in the country, and you can explore it a few different ways.

Most locals like to zip-line through the beautiful caves on a 2.5-hour tour—but don't forget to bring your jacket. You can also attempt the globe's only ropes course that's underground. For more low-key groups, tram tours run through the cave with guides doling out tidbits about how the Mega Cavern came to be.

Dance, Play and Drink at Zanzabar in Louisville

Zanzabar first opened its doors back in 1938, but that doesn't mean it remains stuck in the past. To the contrary, this Louisville bar has evolved just as much as, or maybe more than, other businesses in the city. Part bar and restaurant, part music venue, part vintage arcade, there's plenty to see, do, and drink at Zanzabar, also know as Zbar.

Most folks come for the live music. Both local and nationally renowned acts grace the stage at Zanzabar, and their music styles run the gamut. Dancing is encouraged. But almost as many patrons flock to Zbar for its pinball machines. You can join in the pinball tournament every Sunday night, or just play one of the vintage machines for a few rounds any night of the week. Some of the old-school machines date back to the late '70s. Other video games are slightly newer—as in from the '80s. Sega, Atari, and Nintendo Donkey Kong are among them. Refuel with a gourmet pizza and a frosty beer after a few rounds in the arcade.

The entire menu of sweets is made in-house, from scratch, and it's been that way since Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen first made its debut back in 1982.
