The FDA’s Guidelines for Safe Cooking Temperatures

October 23, 2013 2:34 pm

The number one way to prevent foodborne illness is to ensure foods are cooked to the proper temperature. Using a meat thermomentor is the best way to tell. Check out this chart for the correct temperatures at which foods should be served, and read these handy tips:

  • If you are using a food thermometer, make sure you test a couple areas of the meat, just not one spot, to ensure it is cooked all the way through. Don't rely on the color of the meat to tell you that it's cooked!
  • Never eat raw eggs. Eggs are done when the whites and yolk are firm.
  • When using a microwave, make sure you cover the food, stir it occasionally, and rotate it in the microwave. After the microwave has stopped, allow for some standing time so the item can complete cooking.
  • Even if you're just reheating a sauce or soup, it's important to still bring them to a boil before enjoying.

Best Kentucky Parks: Hit The Trail

October 9, 2013 12:53 pm

The Louisville area is famous for its natural beauty. Located on the Ohio River, the city is ringed by lush forests and boasts over 120 city parks, many of which were designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. One of Louisville's most popular parks is Cherokee Park, which welcomes over a half a million visitors ever year to its green lawns, winding trails and the Nettleroth Bird Sanctuary. Iroquois Park is more heavily forested. Often referred to as the “Yellowstone of Kentucky,” this park is centered around Burnt Knob, a tall hill covered with old growth forest that offers spectacular views of Louisville's city skyline. For a more urban experience, the Louisville Waterfront Park runs along the Ohio River and hosts frequent outdoor concerts. It also boasts a linear fountain system that attracts hordes of children. It’s the largest public park in the country with free Wi-Fi internet access. No matter what your interest, there’s a park in Louisville for you!
