Stroke a Starfish at the Environmental Discovery Center in Santa Rosa
June 2, 2015 | sack
If you're looking for something fun to do with youngsters (for free), the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) in Santa Rosa is always a safe bet. Maintained by the Sonoma County Parks and Recreation Department, this public space inspires little imaginations with its nature-oriented exhibits.
Many local kids love the EDC's tide pool, probably because they're not only allowed, but encouraged to touch here. Kids can stroke a starfish or hold it in their hands, feel the prickly spines of a sea urchin, and maybe even get spritzed by a sea scallop (Yelpers say they're notorious for squirting onlookers). Little ones also might enjoy meeting the EDC's resident turtle, Shelby, and slithering corn snakes. They can also learn about the plant life native to Sonoma County via interactive exhibits, perform science experiments on nature (every first Saturday of the month), or go on a hike with the whole family, led by nature lovers.
