Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park: Step Back In Time

March 5, 2013 | sack

Visitors to the Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park in Petaluma will find themselves drawn back in time. The adobe recreates a simpler life when the adobe was the center of operations for General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's sprawling ranch in the 1830s and 1840s. Built to accommodate the 600-2,000 ranch workers at Petaluma, the adobe was the largest privately owned building in Northern California during its heyday. Visitors will learn about the history of the Native Americans, Mexicans, and Spanish workers who grew crops and tended the cattle and sheep on the ranch. The park also features many native plants and animals that make up the natural landscape on the site. The $2 adult admission makes Petaluma Adobe a particularly affordable attraction, and the self-guided tours allow you to proceed at your own pace. To experience the history of Sonoma County, or just to escape to a quieter place, Petaluma Adobe is a memorable state park.
