Elaine’s Pork and Pie: A Unique Menu near Elan East in Austin

Pork and pie is quite the random combination, but that's what it's all about at this Austin eatery. Chef and owner Elaine Martin has been at the helm of Elaine's Pork and Pie and satisfying customers for nearly three decades. The menu here isn't too large; in fact, it's pretty simple. Customers typically come here for — you guessed it — the pork or the pies. If you decide to stop by, consider dining in or ordering takeout to enjoy back at Elan East.

It probably comes as no surprise that the pulled pork sandwiches are some of the most popular items here. Customers say they are cooked just right, they're quite large, and the price is reasonable at $5.95. Regulars also praise the pulled pork tacos that are sold for just $1.75 apiece. If you'd prefer something a bit lighter, opt for the lentil soup or the green bean or Greek salad. When it's time for dessert, try one of the house-made pies such as the bourbon buttermilk, lime, ancho fudge, or strawberry cream cheese pies.

Morris Williams Golf Course: An Austin Golf Course Near Elan East

Most golfers who try to live up to the legend of Austin native Morris Williams, Jr. will fall short. The storied golfer got his hands on every trophy within his reach, from the Texas Junior Championship trophy to the National Air Force Trophy—the second of which was eventually renamed in his honor. Today his legacy lives on near Elan East at his namesake Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.

Designed by famed golf course architect Leon Howard in 1964, Morris Williams Golf Course was only the third public course in Austin. Although the course looks a bit different today thanks to a recent renovation (check out the new clubhouse and cart "barn"), Morris Williams Golf Course still showcases rolling greens with contoured hills. Call to reserve a tee time at this popular Austin course, which was once the home of the University of Texas golf teams.

Austin Daily Press: Tasty Food near Elan East

Even when the Austin Daily Press only existed as a food truck, it was already making waves nationwide. The flagship food truck participated as a contestant on the Food Network's The Great Food Truck Race. Its brick-and-mortar location on MLK Boulevard still serves up the same creative sandwiches that won it fans across the country after its stint on the reality show.

According to regulars, the Pineapple Express is well worth a taste. This sandwich is actually a Mexican-style torta, meaning it comes on a Telera roll with veggies pickled in-house and a medley of herbs. The Pineapple Express is layered with roasted chicken and Black Forest ham, a pineapple-ginger chutney, cheese, and spicy ranch dressing. The Lucy torta is another popular option, this one stuffed with lemongrass-braised pork, aioli and sriracha sauce, sweet and hot pickles, onion, cilantro, and cooling mint. However, Austin Daily Press also serves paninis, traditional deli-style sandwiches, and sliders.
