Blue Starlite Mini-Urban Drive-In: A One-of-a-Kind Experience Near Elan East in Austin

In 2009, Josh Frank of Austin set up a makeshift drive-in movie theater in an alley as an anniversary surprise for his fiancee. What he thought would be a one-night venture evolved into Blue Starlite Mini-Urban Drive-In, situated in a lot about five minutes from Elan East Apartments.

It consists of spaces for 50 cars, a funky, vintage trailer that serves as both the ticket booth and concession stand, and an inflatable screen. Moviegoers describe seeing a movie here as a special experience — it’s even been the site of about a dozen marriage proposals — and it’s been named one of the 10 must-visit nightlife spots in Austin.

Blue Starlite focuses on indie films, drive-in classics, Generation X and Y favorites, and beloved childhood movies. Through May 16 it’s hosting its first annual Fantasy Fest, showing double features of films of the fantasy genre. How To Train Your Dragon and Dragonslayer are showing April 24, and The Goonies and The Explorers are showing April 25.

First Annual Texas Tea Festival: Enjoy Tea near Elan East in Austin

Tea is much more than a warm morning beverage or a calming night cap. Depending on the variety, it's also an excellent source of antioxidants and other health-boosting components that can ease everything from an upset stomach to racing thoughts. The appearance of the First Annual Texas Tea Festival on Austin's social schedule this year proves that coffee has a strong competitor in tea.

If you prefer the sweet, aromatic drink to java (or even if your loyalties are split), you should attend this event at Saengerrunde Hall on Sunday, February 8. Don't worry if you've never had a sip of tea—you'll have plenty of opportunities to try it here. Tastings of oolong, green, black, flavored, and even chai teas will all be available at the festival. In fact, each attendee gets a ceramic tasting cup to take home with their ticket. Learn more about the beverage at a Tea Talk, enjoy a few tea-time snacks, or chat with specialty tea vendors.

The Contemporary Austin near Elan East: See Eclectic Art

The Contemporary Austin is a new type of art museum, a "museum without walls." It's composed to two buildings in Austin, the Jones Center and The Art School, as well as an outdoor garden at Laguna Gloria. The various locations double as integral parts of the vibrant Austin community, so the eclectic works of art housed therein feel like natural parts of the scenery.

So it makes sense that the displays themselves stray from convention. Past exhibits have included 17,000 Observations by a pair of L.A. artists known as Lucky Dragons. The unique installation at Laguna Gloria married music and sculpture in a fresh way. Tom Sachs: Boombox Retrospective 1999-2015 is a current exhibit running through April of this year, and you'll find bits and pieces of it at various The Contemporary Austin locations. Go see it for yourself and you might just be impressed by the way American sculptor Tom Sachs recreates the boombox to represent different ideas and concepts.
