Paperboy: Do Breakfast at This Upscale Food Truck

January 13, 2016 11:01 am

A new area restaurant earning raves from visitors isn't actually a restaurant at all. Paperboy is a food trailer that serves breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. Located about two miles from Elan East in the East 11th Street neighborhood, Paperboy showcases the best of Austin’s gourmet food truck scene.

Breakfast sandwiches like the B.E.C. with bacon, a fried egg, and spicy pimento cheese, combine favorite tastes with bold new flavors. A must-try here is the hash, a mash-up of roasted sweet potatoes, peppers, onions, poached egg, bacon, and Chile-coffee mayo. Paperboy also offers coffee from Tweed Coffee Roasters.

The prices are reasonable, with large portions and nothing that costs more than $10. The outdoor patio seating makes it a causal but scenic spot, filled with dog walkers, strollers, and joggers. Each table gets a free newspaper to peruse while dining. Great for a quick breakfast or lunch, Paperboy is fast becoming a must-visit.

BYO Containers to Fill at Eco-Friendly Co-Op In.gredients

January 6, 2016 2:00 pm

At In.gredients, grocery shopping is more of an event than an errand. This co-op near Elan East cares as much about Mother Nature as it does the Austin community. To that end, it sources all of its ingredients from local farmers who are practicing sustainable farming, and it operates using eco-friendly approaches.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of In.gredients is its "precycling" program. That starts with you; before you come in, find and wash a few clean plastic or glass containers. Then when you get to the store, weigh and label each container. This is to ensure that the cashier applies the right tare when he or she weighs your grub. Load up each container with whatever you need, from veggies to oatmeal, from eggs to flour. In.gredients has almost everything, but it's not packaged the way you're used to seeing it. This minimum-waste approach to grocery shopping leaves a small footprint on the earth, which is exactly the point.
