It should come as no surprise that the proprietors of this studio near Elan East take great pains to make sure their pupils are comfortable, given that they founded Eastside Yoga specifically to bring the peace and calm they'd experienced through yoga to the people of Austin.

In their cozy neighborhood studio, Steven and Elsa work with a team of highly trained teachers to do just that. They hold a variety of yoga classes starting with the classic Hatha. This slow-flowing class caters to newbies with its focus on linking breath to movement. Strengthen and Lengthen, on the other hand, adds an element of more challenging weight training to typical yoga.

Austin's Figure 8 Coffee Purveyors might be one of the best places to grab coffee near Elan East. The space itself is welcoming and cool, with rich woods and retro accents giving it a distinctive character. The coffee itself is highly praised: regulars note that the cold brew iced coffee is refreshing and smooth, and coffee and espresso drinks receive equally high regard.

Regulars note that the atmosphere here makes it the perfect place to relax with a cup of coffee and a book, a laptop, or for good conversation with a friend. Long communal tables offer plenty of space, and there's room at the coffee bar, too.

Ramen once had a reputation as cheap fast food for thrifty college students, but in recent years the dish has undergone a bit of a renaissance as inventive restaurants have done their part to present ramen in new varieties with fresh ingredients. Sure, the noodles of old remain — although now they're typically made with more care, served in a hearty broth made from scratch. However, they're now paired with fresh vegetables, seasoned proteins, and much more.

The area near Elan East offers a few places to enjoy this renewed version of ramen, including Austin's Daruma Ramen. This restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, offering ramen dishes like Shio Ramen with soft-boiled egg, boy choy, seaweed, and more, and Miso Ramen with shredded chicken, bean sprouts, soft-boiled egg, and scallions. Lucy’s Fried Chicken Revival: A South by South Austin Event not far from Elan East

Elan East and Greystar are hosting a few fun events during SXSW, including the fifth annual installment of Lucy's Fried Chicken Revival. If you're not already a fan of Lucy's Fried Chicken, it's a popular Austin restaurant that offers a menu of Southern-style cuisine: think mac and cheese, catfish sandwiches, fried green tomatoes, and corn bread muffins in addition to fried chicken available in a number of distinctive styles.

During SXSW, Lucy's South Congress location stages a concert outdoors. From March 18 through March 22, musicians will play from noon til 7 p.m., entertaining guests with sounds ranging from rock and bluegrass to zydeco. On the long list of artists, you'll find talented duos like Mandolin Orange, inventive acts like The Iguanas, and solo performers like Kelley Mickwee.

Museum of the Weird: An Austin Museum near Elan East

"Weird" might be Austin's watch-word, and the Museum of the Weird makes a strong effort to do its part to keep the city weird. It bills itself as "America's Strangest Attraction," and it showcases a number of curios suited for making visitors experience the strange.

Weird artifacts, weird statues, a weird giant King Kong, weird memorabilia: everything here is meant to contribute to the place's mission. In addition to a guided tour of the space, admission grants visitors the chance to see a sideshow.

Adjacent to the space you'll find the Lucky Lizard Gift Shop, offering a number or weird gifts along with some interesting decorative items that might just add a distinctive touch to your home.

The Hightower: An Austin Restaurant not far from Elan East

Yelp reviewers can't say enough about the enticing flavors of the roasted pork jowl at The Hightower. The Austin eatery not far from Elan East offers plenty of well-regarded dishes—including many updated barbecue eats—but the roasted pork jowl shows up in glowing reviews time and time again. That's because in addition to the tender meat, the entree includes rice and egg yolk, burnt avocado, pickled shallots, cucumber, as well as fiery house sriracha sauce.

If you're interested in The Hightower's meat-free fare, try the smoked tofu. It earns similarly high marks from customers, and comes with pinto beans, huitlacoche, sopecitos, avocado, a crema crafted from cashews and almonds, and a dusting of sunflower seeds. Both dishes are available at lunch and dinner (though the accompaniments vary based on the hour). You can pair your chosen dish with one of the house's signature cocktails, perhaps the High Tail with Bulleit Rye and honey, or the Italian Fizz with vodka, blood orange soda, and Campari.

First Annual Texas Tea Festival: Enjoy Tea near Elan East in Austin

Have a Latte near Elan East at Austin’s Vintage Heart Coffee

Austin certainly isn't lacking in local businesses, and Vintage Heart Coffee highlights the best of them in its menu of coffee drinks and baked goods. It sources fair-trade coffee from Third Coast Roasting Company, which sits only a few miles away on South Congress. With the beans, Vintage Heart's baristas work their magic. They craft popular vanilla lattes—complete with the obligatory latte art—and serve them in reusable ceramic mugs, just like all of the hot drinks. The cold drinks, on the other hand, come in cute mason jars—try an iced mocha. Vintage Heart's baristas add their own house-made coffees to the mix.

Other local businesses that contribute to Vintage Heart Coffee's inventory include Russell's Bakery, which provides everything from cookies and brownies made from scratch to danish and croissants. Vegans can enjoy a baked good with their coffee, too, thanks to the doughnuts and muffins provided by Rabbit Cooperative Bakery. They contain no milk, eggs, or other animal products.
