Liberty Yoga: From FLY! Vinyasa to Slow-Flowing Therapeutic Classes

Liberty Yoga's co-owners Erin Sweeney and Christine Shaw come from very different backgrounds, which is what makes them such an effective duo. Christine has been immersed in the world of fitness since the '80s, back when aerobics and step classes were the status quo. She taught those classes 30 years ago, but in 1998, she discovered yoga. The slower style of strength-training intrigued her so much that she got certified and started teaching in 2004. She still incorporates some of the fast-paced fitness of her past at FLY! Vinyasa classes, which move at a quick clip and keep both mind and body engaged.

Erin, on the other hand, didn't begin teaching until 2008, and it was a much slower style of yoga that caught her attention. Erin caters to an older demographic with her therapeutic yoga classes, which are designed to stretch out aching muscles using Iyengar techniques. The classes flow at a slow pace and are perfect for someone with stiff joints or anyone new to yoga.

Olive Tree Cafe: An Institution for Mediterranean Fare

Don't be surprised if the smell of baking bread greets you when you walk into Olive Tree Cafe in Newark. The kitchen team mixes, kneads, and bakes its own bread in-house. That's how you know it'll always be fresh. And the fresh bread is just the tip of the iceberg. The chefs at Olive Tree Cafe also source their veggies and meats locally when they can, so they're just as fresh and enticing as the bread.

These ingredients converge in authentic Mediterranean dishes, such as the shawarma platter. It showcases grilled chicken breast with a garlicky sauce and a house salad, as well as seasoned rice or fries on the side. You can also dig into a plate of salmon, rubbed down with Mediterranean spices and adorned with onions, olives, and cherry tomatoes. Olive Tree also offers tagines, which refers to the clay pot in which these meaty dishes are prpared and served, as well as a slate of sandwiches and savory pies.

Evergreen Apartment Group Wishes Everyone a Safe, Happy Holiday Season with Important Apartment Living Safety Tips!

Dear Residents,

The holiday season is now upon us! Evergreen Apartment Group would like to extend our very best wishes to all our wonderful residents for a fantastic holiday season and a happy, healthy and successful New Year.

Thank you for choosing to call an Evergreen Community home… we love and appreciate our residents!

Many of our residents will be decorating their homes for the holidays. Christmas trees are a traditional and beautiful part of decoration for the holiday season. But we do need your help and cooperation with the following:

• Getting your tree into your apartment: Unfortunately, some tenants make a mess getting their tree into their apartment. When you bring your tree into your building, please be careful not to bang your tree into walls, windows or doors. Obviously, such banging can do damage to the paint, drywall and wood. Please also make sure to pick up any needles that fall off your tree in the hallways. Do not allow sap to drip inside the buildings.

• Once your tree is in your apartment: Please place a sheet or plastic underneath the tree and limbs. This will protect your carpet from sap and the needles of the tree.

• Beware of Fire Hazards: Please do a THOROUGH INSPECTION of any electrical decorations to make sure they are safe and in good working condition. DO NOT use any electrical decorations with exposed or frayed wires, or loose bulb connections. ALL electrical decorations MUST be UL Listed. Also, please keep your tree well watered. A dried-up tree is a dangerous fire hazard. Never leave lit candles unattended in your apartment. You must have renter’s insurance coverage in effect at all times as required by the Rental Agreement and test your smoke detector(s).

• After the holiday season is over: Please wrap your tree in a sheet of plastic. Take care as you move the tree out of your apartment & out of the building. Place your wrapped tree beside (not inside or in front) any of the dumpsters.

Unfortunately, the holiday season can also be a time of difficulty and desperation for those less fortunate. Please join us in assisting those less fortunate and use good judgment to avoid being victimized during the holiday season.

Please review the information below:

• Apartment Angels Charity: Evergreen Apartment Group is proud to be a founding member of the Apartment Angels Charity program. This week we will be providing a homeless family with a free apartment which gives them the opportunity to reposition their life. This will be the 5th homeless family that has received a free apartment home from Evergreen. For more information, please visit http://www.daaonline.org/page/apartment-angels.html.

• Never leave valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle: Any gifts you receive or purchase should never be left in your car… it is an invitation for someone to break-in.

• Never invite individuals into your apartment that you don’t previously have a relationship with: A common scam is for an individual to knock on your door and then ask to borrow something or try to sell you something. If you invite them into your home, they have the opportunity to case your home for valuables. Even if the individual is a neighbor, never allow someone into your home unless you already have an established relationship. Make sure that all your doors and windows have locks in good working order and all locks are securely shut. If you have any problems with any of your locks, contact the Rental Office immediately.

• Be aware of phone/email/internet scams: Never purchase something over the phone or internet from an unsolicited caller/email/web site or from any company that you have not heard of previously. Never give out bank account information or credit card information over the phone or over the web on an unsecure site.

Ramen Kumamoto: Gourmet Japanese Fare Awaits

Chef Sam Ho has served as the sous chef at Morimoto and the owner at Zento Japanese Temporary Cuisine, both located in Philadelphia, so he already has plenty of solid culinary experience under his belt. He shows it off at Ramen Kumamoto, a restaurant in Wilmington that dishes out modern Japanese cuisine.

Unsurprisingly, ramen is the main event at Ramen Kumamoto. It comes in a spate of different preparations, like the tonkotsu. This version teems with natural heritage Berkshire Pork, as well as chunks of roast pork, bamboo shoots, sprouts, mushrooms, chopped scallion, red ginger, and a boiled egg. Thin noodles form the base, along with a savory broth. You can also try something with more heat, like the tan tan ramen. This soup features a spicy chicken broth base, augmented by miso sesame paste and ingredients like minced meat, sprouts, and scallion. Yellow wavy noodles stand in for the thin, straight noodles in the tonkotsu.

Fort Delaware State Park: A Piece of Local History with National Significance

When Fort Delaware was constructed in 1859, its purpose was simple in theory, but not so simple in reality: to protect Wilmington and Philadelphia's ports in an era distinguished by civil war. It went on to house Confederate prisoners of war, and, eventually, to serve as Fort Delaware State Park.

Hop a ferry from Delaware City, and it'll shuttle you across half a mile of waves to Pea Patch Island. From there, you'll have to board another jitney to get to the fort itself, a menacing building crafted from brick and granite. Once you're inside, you'll be transported back to a time when the fort was still in full operation: summer of 1864. The costumed docents will teach you about the ins and outs of life at the fort, including how blacksmiths made cannons and how the staff did the laundry. If you're interested in a day of learning local history, Fort Delaware is your spot.
