Akira Sushi Grill and Wok is a causal Japanese and Chinese restaurant in Round Rock.  Their Japanese menu features many regular and specialty rolls as well as an array of raw fish nigiri and sashimi.  A customer favorite is the orange blossom roll; a several types of fish, avocado, and unagi sauce in a beautiful presentation.   Although the ingredients sound like an odd combination, regulars swear by the Akai roll with broiled unagi, cream cheese, and avocado topped with strawberries.  Many customers come for the Japanese dishes, but Akira makes great Chinese food as well, like General Tso’s and Mongolian stir-frys.  There are several tofu options for vegetarian customers.  Stop in for generously portion bento boxes and discounted wok specialties.

Campo Azul Bar & Mexican Grill: A Round Rock Secret for Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Campo Azul Bar & Mexican Grill is a secret gem in Round Rock for authentic Mexican food.  This little cantina is family owned and operated and offers an enjoyable dining experience.  There is rarely a wait and customers appreciate the prompt, friendly service.  The menu is small in comparison to most Mexican restaurants, but dishes are made with fresh ingredients – including the homemade tortillas.  A customer favorite and house specially is the Mocajate; a mix of fajita meats and veggies served a stone bowl to keep your meal warm.  Not only are prices reasonable but the portions are quite generous and you’ll likely have leftovers.  Campo Azul offers $5.99 weekday lunch specials and their happy hour from 4-7 p.m. features discounts on already low-priced beers.  Stop in after work for a Mexican draft beer or jumbo margarita.  This place is very welcoming with fresh updated decor.  There is even an outdoor patio that has occasional entertainment and salsa lessons.

Saltgrass Steak House: Fit For A Cowboy

The popular Texas-based chain, Saltgrass Steak House brings casual and reliable dining to Round Rock.  All their steaks are Certified Angus Beef, grilled to order, and topped with garlic butter and their signatures Saltgrass-7 Steak Spice.  There are many cuts and combos to choose from, and favorites are the Cowboy Ribeye and Maudeen’s Center Cut Filet.  If you come with a cowboy appetite, start with the thinly-sliced, french fried onions, a large portion perfect for sharing.  Salads are dressed with homemade vinaigrettes and served with Saltgrass’s Shiner Bock Beer Bread.  The decor plays up the Western theme with rustic wood, stone elements and Longhorn heads.  If you enjoy your experience, get their frequent diner card.  Although it costs $25, you’ll earn it back on your next visit, as well as an additional $25 discount for your birthday and bonuses the more you dine – not to mention priority seating to avoid long waits.

Jack Allen’s Kitchen

Executive chef and owner Jack Gilmore and his partner Tom Kamm are the masterminds behind Jack Allen’s Kitchen in Round Rock. They take pride in offering delicious “new American cuisine” from locally-sourced food. Instead of bread, Jack Allen’s starts your meal with a taste of their signature pimiento cheese and flatbread crackers. Many dishes combine Southern favorites with a Southwestern twist, and you’ll probably have a tough time deciding because everything sounds delicious. The BLT sliders come highly recommended and are made with grilled pork belly and fried green tomatoes. The Chile Mango Shrimp tacos are another favorite of regulars. The menu also features seasonal specials every night as well as a Sunday brunch buffet. Service is helpful and attentive. High ceilings, warm woods and local art make the atmosphere feel welcoming and airy. Reservations are recommended.

Tasty Chicken and More at Pluckers Wing Bar

Want to watch the game? Head to Pluckers Wing Bar in Round Rock, just a few minutes from Indigo Apartments. This place loves to use their fryers! Pluckers has 19 zesty sauces to coat their crispy and juicy wings, like the Hallelujah, sweet sauce with a kick, and Spicy Mandarin, for a flavorful twist. If you want to challenge your taste buds, try Fire In The Hole, their hottest sauce.  Those that manage to put away 25 wings will appear on their “wall of flame.” (If you do, make sure to cool off with some sweet tea.) Other fried favorites are the pickles, fried mac and cheese, and thick-cut homemade potato chips with warm blue cheese dressing. Burgers and sandwiches round out their menu, along with several sides including twice baked potato casserole, waffle fries, and mac and cheese — which many people swear is the best they’ve had.
