From the outside, La Châtaigne is an unassuming little shop with a few bistro tables outside. Inside, however, it becomes clear that this Lafayette bakery is a local powerhouse. 

Not only are the big glass display cases always filled to the brim with freshly baked pastries, there also often a line of customers milling about, deciding which combination of goodies to choose. You’ll find buttery, flaky croissants alongside sweet treats like eclairs, madeleines, and lemon curd tarts. The shop also bakes a line of flavored savory breads that can enhance any meal. Choose one of the fan-shaped olive and rosemary fougasse loaves to accompany your dinner, or some tomato and cheese focaccia rolls to enjoy with your lunch. Chiabatta loaves and whole wheat boules are also available, and reviewers note that the kitchen is happy to take special bulk orders, too.
