How to Cut Calories and Fat in Your Favorite Baking Recipes

If you want to make your baked goods a bit healthier without sacrificing taste, replacing the oil in the recipe is a great trick. There are many products that you can substitute for oil, and they’ll still maintain the recipe's moist consistency and chewy, soft texture. Here are two of the best oil alternatives.

  1. Applesauce. If you’re baking a cake, cookies, or other type of sweet baked goods, applesauce is a very healthy alternative to oil. It makes your dish just as moist and soft, and it also adds a lightly sweetened taste. Simply add the same amount of applesauce as you would oil and bake like normal.
  2. Ground flax seeds. Ground flax seeds are a great alterative to oil in everything from baked goods to dressings and sauces. Mix three parts flax seed meal for every part of oil in cakes or breads, then reduce the baking time by just a few minutes to prevent browning. For dressings and sauces, mix the ground flax seeds into hot water to create an oil-like consistency. Start by using an amount of water equal to the amount of oil that your recipe calls for, and then add flax seeds in teaspoon increments until the water reaches the desired consistency.
