Red Hot and Blue: Virginia Barbecue

If you’re on the hunt for fine barbecue, Red Hot and Blue might be a great destination near The Courts at Historic Manassas. This delightful Virginia barbecue place offers up a wide variety of dishes that frequent diners seem to adore. Barbecue here is prepared Memphis style, with the emphasis on dry rubbed meats. The pulled pork sandwich is one popular choice, with delicate shreds of pork and a selection of sauce. Regulars rave about the "Sufferin’ Sweet" sauce, too.

For a real treat, go for Red Hot and Blue's “surf & turf” – an order of ribs paired with fried catfish. Cooking catfish is a difficult task, and the catfish you'll find here is regarded as some of the best in the area. Red Hot and Blue also offers a number of tasty side dishes: the baked beans are reportedly smoky and rich, and the potato salad offers a nice creamy counterpoint to the meat.

Pleasant service, reasonable prices, and a welcoming ambiance round out the delightful experience at Red Hot and Blue.

Kline’s Freeze: Some of the Sweetest Treats in Manassas, Virginia

When you're craving an frozen treat to tame the heat, head to the giant ice cream cone sign at Kline’s Freeze. Kline's Freeze is a Manassas classic. Sure, the exterior may look a little dated, but this Centreville Road ice cream stop is all about the sweet treats and good food served inside. We all know that nothing tames the temperature like a big, tasty swirl of soft-serve ice cream dipped in chocolate, and that's one of the delicious options you'll find here. Kline's boasts what might be called a well-curated menu of ice cream flavors: there's vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, and each can be fancied up with an array of sprinkles and toppings. Milk shakes are available, of course, and if you're feeling hungry, Kline's Freeze also serves hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, fries, chicken fingers, and other food. Like many ice cream places, Kline's Freeze is closed in the winter.

Play It Safe: 5 Steps for Handling Eggs

You parents have probably warned you about food-borne illness since you were just a child, but how much do you really know about handling raw eggs? These simple steps will teach you how to safely prepare and serve eggs.

  1. Purchase eggs in good quality. Only buy eggs from a refrigerated case, and open the carton to make sure that none of the eggs are cracked. Refrigerate them as soon as you get home.
  2. Know their expiration date. As a general rule, eggs are only good for about three weeks. After that, you should throw them out and buy a new carton.
  3. Cook thoroughly. When cooking eggs, make sure that there are no runny parts before serving. Things like casseroles and baked goods should be cooked to at least 160° Fahrenheit to ensure that the eggs inside are safe to eat.
  4. Serve properly. All foods containing eggs should be eaten immediately after cooking. To serve a large party buffet-style, keep hot dishes hot by using a slow cooker or heated serving pan.
  5. Store safely. If you must refrigerate a dish with eggs, be sure to use it within three to four days and reheat to at least 160° before serving.

Iron Horse Antiques: A Link To The Past

The rich historical tradition of the Mid-South region makes it an antiquer’s dream. From the earliest days of American civilization to artifacts from the 20th century, you’ll find it all at Iron Horse Antiques. This extensive shop unites over forty different dealers under one roof, each with their own specialties. Spread out over two floors, Iron Horse regulars rave about the incredible selection and very fair prices. Historical memorabilia is a specialty here, as the Manassas area hosted the first major battle of the Civil War. The steam locomotives that brought equipment to the troops gave the store its name, and a G gauge model train runs along the inside of the first floor. In addition, there’s interesting ceramics, butter churns, typewriters, and much more. Even better, an on-site bakery makes fresh bread and cookies for visitors to enjoy. This is a great place to visit if you want to experience a little taste of the Manassas area’s past.

Sugarland Run Stream Valley Trail: Three Miles to Run

Looking for a quiet place to jog or ride your bicycle? Part of the countywide trail system, Sugarland Run Stream Valley Trail runs three miles from Sugarland Road to the Town of Herndon line. There are three additional miles of side trails, and they're all paved, so it's safe and easy to follow. All streams are bridged. Some trails cut through neighborhoods, and be careful — access can be steep. Deer are plentiful, but parking is limited and there are no service facilities.
