August: A Culinary Delight in South Philadelphia

This awesome Italian restaurant is one of Philadelphia’s most popular eateries, and for good reason. The kitchen is absolutely top-notch. This is an intimate BYOB restaurant, with just 30 seats. Opening across from Columbus Square Park in South Philly, August developed a local following with incredible speed. The menu is Italian fusion, incorporating flavors and ingredients from all over the world, and there’s not a bad dish on the entire menu. Appetizers are well-constructed and lead you into the meal with ease – try the great beet salad or the sautéed artichoke hearts with sun-dried tomato, white beans, and spinach. Some of the favorites according to regular diners include the astounding farfalle pasta with lump crabmeat, porcini mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes in a light, refreshing cream sauce, as well as the awesome pan-roasted salmon with sweet chili sauce and risotto. Desserts are very good, with the banana bread pudding and the cheesecake both winning raves.

Modo Mio: A Gustatory Ride

Great Italian food isn’t hard to find in Philadelphia – the City of Brotherly Love has long embraced the cuisine, and locals argue ferociously about the best in town. One serious contender would have to be Modo Mio. Step in the door and you’ll be transported to a family dining room in Sicily. Modo Mio's dining room is small and homey and you won’t be able to avoid overhearing the conversations at adjoining tables. It’s a testament to the stellar quality of the food that you won’t mind – this place gets it all right. The menu is extensive and easy to browse, with a number of standout entrees garnering raves from diners. The bucatini Amatrician with pancetta in a spicy tomato sauce is excellent, the veal Parmigiano elevates the Italian standard to a new level, and the veal ravioli in sage butter melts in your mouth. Modo Mio is a real find that any eater would be pleased to check out.

Tacconelli’s: Five Generations Of Philadelphia’s Best Pizza

The East Coast is serious about pizza, with most major cities boasting their own regional style that they trumpet above all others. If you’re in Philly, the city’s pizza mecca is Tacconelli’s. In 1918, Giovanni Tacconelli came from Italy to bake bread. He wanted to do it the old country way, so he and his friends built a 20 x 20 brick oven. That oven, after World War II, began being used to produce pizza pies of such intense quality that his name quickly became synonymous with pizza. That same oven is behind Tacconelli’s spectacular pizza to this day (although it got a little facelift in the 1990s). This is a no assembly-line pizza parlor—there’s just one man working one oven, and everything is painstakingly handcrafted. This translates into spectacular, rustic pizzas with gorgeous aromas that will make you question New York’s pizza dominance. The crust is mighty thin, so don’t overload it with —keep it simple and it will serve you well. Oh, and a word to the wise: Tacconelli’s recommends that you reserve your dough in advance if you plan to eat in or take out—otherwise you might be out of luck.
