Golden Key Chinese Restaurant: Norristown Chinese Cuisine

It can be really hard to judge a Chinese restaurant from the outside – some of the least impressive visually are the ones that knock out the most delicious and authentic meals. Norristown’s Golden Key is a perfect example – it doesn’t look like much, nestled in a small space in Norristown, but the food is exceptional. The restaurant has been in business since 1989, winning the praise of generations of residents. The menu is full of the traditional offerings, with some favorites being the sesame chicken, which is a perfect combination of sweet and savory, as well as the tender pepper beef. Egg rolls are also quite good, fried to toothsome deliciousness. It’s also possible to just make a meal out of appetizers, with the scallion pancakes and wonton soup very popular. Prices are incredibly reasonable, especially for the lunch specials.

Sessano Cafe and Deli: Splendid Sandwiches

There are plenty of places to get a good Italian sandwich or a cheese steak in the Norristown area, but diners frequently rave about Sessano Cafe and Deli for one very good reason: the roast pork. Owner and head chef Santino Ciccaglione is justifiably proud of his recipe, which slow-roasts a huge pig until it’s amazingly tender and moist, not dry like the competition. In Italy, this kind of roast is called the “porchetta,” and it’s started gaining a following in America in recent years. Served on a wide Hoagie roll, the meat comes out hot and covered with melted sharp Provolone and peppers. It’s seriously one of the best sandwiches the town has to offer. The rest of the menu is fair to decent as well, with some Italian specialties and burgers, but the real draw here is the porchetta. They also do catering and delivery. Prices are extremely reasonable.

Affamato’s: Piece of the Pie

Pennsylvania has plenty of Italian restaurants, but few win as much praise from locals as Affamato’s in Norristown. This is a totally unpretentious neighborhood joint that doesn’t do anything fancy, but executes every meal with attention to detail and recipes grabbed straight from an Italian grandmother’s cookbook. The food at Affamato’s is comforting and hearty, and the portion sizes are truly large. The pasta dishes win raves from regulars, with the spaghetti in vodka sauce a favorite. The hand-made meatballs are also spectacular, perfectly moist and savory. Pizza is good as well, with sizable pies topped with a flavorful sauce and a variety of toppings. Some combinations that win raves are the chicken Florentine and the cheesesteak pizza. Speaking of that, sandwich fans also have a lot to love here, with some patrons claiming the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly can be had here. Prices are fair and service is fast and friendly.

Alfredo’s Restaurant: A Norristown Favorite

Alfredo's Restaurant has been a Norristown institution for years, with generations of locals coming through the doors to enjoy top-notch breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Many regulars rave that it’s the best breakfast in town for one reason: the breakfast pizza. This savory slice is a real winner. The burgers here are exceptional, with hand-formed patties and delicious toppings. Alfredo’s also offers up a great version of the “zep." If you’ve never had one, it’s a serious thing: a hoagie roll with salami, Provolone, raw onion and tomato, seasoned with oregano, olive oil, salt and pepper. They do it right. Sure, it’s not the healthiest food that you’ll ever eat in your life, but it's said to be very tasty!
