Uwe’s Bakery and Deli: Germany By Way Of New Braunfels

Uwe’s Bakery and Deli should have a warning sign on the door that discourages people on a diet from entering. Regardless of how much willpower you have, it's hard to resist the food and treats here. This place is designed to give you the feeling that you are in a restaurant in Germany. When you enter, the smell of brat waifs through the air and envelopes you as German music is played in the background.

Breakfast is served all day and lunch is served from 11 a.m. until the kitchen closes, usually around 3. The bakery stays open until around dinner time. Everything is made fresh on the premises. That is why it is so hard to leave without both dessert and a few loaves of bread. If you cannot make it into the brick and mortar store, there is a booth at the farmer’s market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tip Back a Pint at The Dodging Duck Brewhaus

Before they splash into your glass, the beers at The Dodging Duck Brewhaus never see the light of day. They originate in a 10-barrel brewery system housed at The Dodging Duck, residing in stainless steel tanks calibrated to exactly 34 degrees. That's until the beers make their way through chilled lines to the tap and slosh into pint glasses. From an IPA and stout to lighter ales, the craft beers have put Boerne on the map. This brewery has even brought home gold and silver medals from the World Beer Championships.

Patrons recommend downing a pint with the fried green tomatoes or antelope burger, two favorites from the kitchen. The menu encompasses everything from chimmichurri beef tenderloin to Thai lettuce wraps to bratwurst. Dine outside on the patio, where you can watch the ducks for which the brewery is named as they paddle around a pond, or sit inside one of the lake house-inspired dining rooms. There's also a huge wraparound bar where you can grab a pint and chat with The Dodging Duck's brewmaster.

Order Pies Your Way at Underground Pizza in New Braunfels

Deciding on a particular kind of pizza can be difficult. That is, unless you dine on the food from Underground Pizza in New Braunfels!

Here, you can go for a traditional cheese pie and top it however you wish. Or order one of Underground Pizza's signature pies, like the Primal, which includes homemade turkey meatballs, sausage, ham, pepperoni, and roasted green chilis. For an extra charge, the friendly staff at Underground Pizza can make your pie with a gluten-free crust, and they will also add some ricotta and turn your pizza pie into a calzone. All pizzas arrive with the perfect amount of char from the wood-fired oven.

In addition to pizza, the menu lists several different gourmet salads, as well as subs. Leave room for dessert, like the fruit cobbler and the cinnamon bread pudding, both of which are topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream!

The Buttermilk Cafe gives New Braunfels Texas residents comfort food with an upscale twist. The sights and smells enjoyed in this cozy ambiance will remind visitors of a family feast at home. Regulars mention the food is always amazing and many drive from Sequin or San Marcos for a meal. The employees are friendly and fast, and the establishment is very kid friendly, too.

The food offerings are vast and unique. We personally recommend the chicken and waffles or the complimentary coffee cake for those dining in. The place does get packed on the weekend, so call ahead to ensure seating once you arrive, especially if you have a large group!

Chow Down on Homestyle Creole Cuisine at McAdoos Seafood

Housed in the century-old New Braunfels Post Office building—which has been beautifully restored to reflect its history—McAdoo’s Seafood Company is a popular restaurant here in New Braunfels.

The seafood-centric menu showcases Creole-style cooking techniques. If you’re going with local suggestions, start with the coconut shrimp, the creamy shrimp and cheese grits, or a selection of fresh oysters. For your entree, try the crawfish and shrimp etouffee over jambalaya with an order of catfish po'boys to share. (If it is nice out, request to be seated in the outdoor patio area!)

Happy hour is hosted 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily and promises $1 off all draft beer and specialty cocktails, $4 wine or house margaritas, and small bites ranging in price from $4 to $6. It might just be one of the best deals in town!

The Gristmill Restaurant: A Taste of Texas That’s Worth the Wait

The Gristmill Restaurant is not only a restaurant, but a true landmark of Gruene, housed in a historic cotton gin right under the Gruene water tower. Stone walls with weathered bricks and wooden beams are paired with modern light fixtures to create a historic-meets-contemporary aesthetic that's hard to replicate.

From “small” onion rings that could feed a whole family to chicken fried steak and strawberry shortcake, the menu is authentically Texan. Crisp salads and juicy burgers are offered, too. On a nice day, be sure to request a seat on the wooden deck or on the multi-level outdoor patio.

The Gristmill River Restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. There are extended hours in the summer, so check their website for more information. Because this is a popular spot, you might have to wait for a table. (Enjoying a margarita in the outdoor beer garden makes the wait fly by!)
